|SurfKaster||If at all possible take your time & don't rush it. As mentioned, with that budget you're most likely going to be in the YJ market. Most of them for that price are going to have some rust & chances are the rear main seal will be leaking. However, if you can afford to take your time you'll find a clean one. I saw one YJ pass by not too long ago that had a V6 Vortec conversion, no rust, super clean, & sold for only $3500. The guy was in a bind & needed cash. Those don't come up that ofter, but if you can afford to wait they're more that worth it.|

|drivebytruckerz||4.0 if you can get it.. +1 on buying stock suggestion.. And try lift the carpet (assuming it has any) and check for rust. Now in that price range there's probably going to be SOME rust, and that's okay. Just don't end up like Fred Flintstone. In this economy sombody needs the cash you have.. Good luck.|

+1 to the above.
If you can get one with the 4.0L. you won't regret that.
You'll likely be looking at a YJ for that price, so hopefully some YJ people can come in and comment more on that.

|JDsDream||Welcome to the forum. I personally would try to find a jeep as close to stock as possible otherwise you can't be sure what has been done to it and if it was done correctly. Rust is a major factor, surface rust is a fact of life, just make sure that it hasn't reached a stage where you can't stop it. Test drive it on all terrain to make sure that the 4x4 is functioning properly and get it out on the road and test for death wobble. There are threads here devoted strictly to DW for you to review. I would also post pics here on the forum, you would be surprised at what these guys can tell you about a jeep just by seeing pics. Hope this helps|
