What are the size of you tires you have on the rims? I have 9.5 wide tires and cant figure out if they are 7 inch or 8 inch wide rims. They seem to be 7 inch but i am not sure.
Edited: Never mind I just read your profile and saw that you have 31x 10.5 wide tires on the rims. How far do the tires stick out past the edge of the rims?

I haven't done anything more than scrub them clean with soapy steel wool at this point. We packed up and went backpacking for a few days, that and prep and clean up and working has kept me from doing much with my Jeep. I'll certainly post pics and updates as they come about though!

|TJNewbie||If you're close to a large truckstop, most of them have a polishing shop (to polish the big fuel tanks and wheels on the 18 wheelers). They also do car wheels, they can take that clear coat off with ease, & make your old aluminum rims look like new chrome. They usually charge $10 a wheel, the shine will last a long time (8 to 12 months, sometimes longer). Afterwards you can easily maintain it, I suggest Flitz polish or Wicked Products- Lightning Shine metal polish, no hard rubbing, it comes off easier than Mothers, & the shine last longer too.|

|TJNewbie||As far as getting that clear coat off, you can use a strong paint remover, but be careful, it's usually costic. brush it on & let it sit till the clear coat starts to loosen then wipe it off, (repeat as needed) get as much as possible of the stripper off by wiping it, then rinse with cold water. After it dries then polish it. DON'T let the stripper get on anything rubber or plastic. if you can find some "Wicked Products, Lightning Shine- Metal Polish" it works better & a whole lot easier than Mothers. it comes in a Yellow squeeze bottle with black label. sold at most truckstops, some Wal-marts, & boat accessory shops. "Flitz" polish works really well too, at walmart & boat shops.|

|andreafahy01||Okay so I've scrubbed my wheels nice and clean with soapy steel wool. They are ready for two steps of polishing -- almost! The one wheel (driver rear) has quite a bit of the clear coating still; some is flaking off but some of it is rather stubborn. Any tips on removal of the remaining bits of clear coat? Once I get these babies shining, it's going to really look awful!|

|InfernoGirl||Go ahead and use the Mag polish on them first. They are pretty rough looking in the pics. Fine steel wool won't hurt them either. There's not really any shine to destroy, which is all steel wool will do, besides taking off the crud. Buff lightly with the steelwool, don't dig into them. If you start with the Billet polish, it'll work, but it'll take a lot longer. I didn't realize they were as weathered as they appear in the pics. Billet polish is great, but it will be most beneficial as the final polish. After you get them cleaned up, the billet polish will be great for maintaining the shine.|

okay so I'm pretty sure they are 15 x 8's with a 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern. Thanks jeepers and wheelsforless for helping me figure it out!

|andreafahy01||SOS pads, eh? I think I remember using those years ago on my bumpers, they were maybe steel (on an '83 Oldsmobile) These wheels are cast aluminum, would the SOS pads be too abrasive on these?|

|nyvulcanman||I drive a big peterbuild tractor here in the northeast withall the salt I have super shiney rims and tanks what I use to keep them that way is a sos pad with soap then dry and I use white lighting polish that's the best stuff to use if u really want them to shine|

Wheel Project - American Racing Outlaw I's
My YJ has American Racing Outlaw I wheels, I still haven't figured out their size but am working on that
In the meantime they need some attention and I figured this is a feasible starter project on my Jeep that I can handle. I plan to polish them, replace the lugs and possibly replace the center caps (or repaint them like the last owner did so I can put my $ towards something more pressing)
First, I've been suggested to use Mothers Billet Polish, but the salesman sent me home with Mag and Aluminum Polish which turns out... "NOTE: Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish is significantly more aggressive than Mothers Billet Metal Polish. If you're polishing modern, billet aluminum wheels, we recommend you use Mothers Billet Metal Polish. Billet Polish uses much finer abrasives and will produce a brighter shine. On the other hand, if your aluminum billet wheels are severely distressed, Billet Polish will not have the power to restore them. Polish first with Mag and Aluminum Polish and if desired, do a final polish with Billet Polish to maximize the shine."
Now to decide if my wheels are severely distressed or not, I don't think they are, do you? If not, then I need to return this stuff and check another auto shop for the billet polish.
At least one wheel (driver rear) seems to still have a bit of the clearcoating, looks like it's flaking off but I need to inspect more closely. That wheel looks pretty bad right now.
