soft top probem fixed
Thanks to all, problem with soft top fixed. I got looking..it is a bestop...the front bar that goes across top of windshield has two lockdown brackets on it. It looks like a hinge but it isn't. There is a bolt in each side...i unbolted each side an all it has is a big lip that goes in a slot in the top of the windshield...I removed those and the bar then layed down flat on top of the windshield...I put the plates back on the bar..with the lip inside the windshield frame and put the two bolts back in...slipped the black plastic lip from the top back in the groove and then slid the bars behind the front seat back up to tighten the roof and draw the top tight....it is perfect now.
I guess whoever put the top on didn't know how it was supposed to work...just like me..lol.
Thanks everyone....now to work some more on the turn/hazard light problem...think I'll take someone's advice and tear out the alarm system that doesn't work and see what happens..

|1BLKJP||Sounds like your top fits more like a bikini with the channel or like the old style CJ/YJ tops fit.|

|Jerry Bransford||It's obvious now that you have an aftermarket top, too bad because the factory soft top is such a great design.|

Ref: soft top problem
Thanks for the info...I will get some pictures tomorrow and post them...there are no levers on the windshield frame or anywhere...mine sounds like the one described with the hard plastic lip on the front of the soft top...it fits into a slot along the bar above the windshield... but it seems that the bar should then roll down onto the windshield frame but it will not go all the way down... I will try and post some pictures tomorrow....

|khenderson||i'm not really sure what you are describing. some pictures would be great...it almost sounds like you don't have the factory soft top, but something like the halp tops use with a header bar and the front edge of the top slides into it.|

The front of the soft top is held to the windshield with two clamps. Two levers draw the clamps up to draw the front down to the top of the windshield frame. Find those two clamps and lift them up so they clamp the top down properly.
If that isn't what's wrong, take a few photos and post 'em or send them to me and I'll help you figure out what's wrong.

soft top problem
I'm a proud new owner of a 97 TJ... however, I have a problem with the soft top. On the way home with my new purchase...the top came loose in the front above the windshield and started to blow back toward the rear of the vehicle.
I stopped and tucked it above the roll bar till I got home. I put it back in place in the slot above the windshield....it is on like a thick round bar. It appears that once in place you should be able to twist this bar down flush with the top of the windshield. Mine doesn't go down that far....
I'm wondering is this what it is supposed to do...it has like two hinges that go inside the round bar...are these springs..could they be sprung not allowing the bar to go all the way down flush on top the windshield frame...The front edge of the soft top when in place sticks up about 1 1/2 to 2'' above the windshield frame...
