Beastmaster Hopefully the OP dosen't mind us hyjacking his thread (his last post was June 2012) but thought I'd show my trailer.

As mentioned, it was a $350 Craigslist find and its a 1942 Willys MBT. Someday I plan on doing a frame off restoration like the OP. For now all I have done was a little repair work, added a lunette, painted and lubed it up.

afd660 Yeah when looking on google the pictures look the same. Cant find any actual dimensions of the Spen, and not many people make Spens into an off roading trailer. I've seen the M416s into overlanding and offroading trailers.

The OP has a nice M416 and a nice restoration of it.

Beastmaster Keep an eye on Craigslist, sometimes good deals pop up.
I picked up my Willys MBT trailer for only $350

XSapper Check the government auction sight, craigslist, e-bay until you find something. the military versions that are popular are the M416 (Canadian M101), the M101(a2 and a3 have 8 lug wheels IIRC)and M116(?) generator trailer.

Submariner I have one of these, M416. 1/4 ton trailer. I have hauled more stuff then you can imagine. make trash runs, dirt runs, hauls camp gear.

I got mine about 18 years ago at the DRMO auction at Fort Lewis in washington.

She has made two trips to canada, three trips to Kansas from Washington, a couple of trips to montana and now she lives down in Oregon and still running strong.

I have put a regular 2" trailer hitch on it and put some Monstaliner inside the tube to help protect her. I do have plans to put a pair of 16" Moab wheels on her this fall so the wheels will match my Rubicon. and I am going to finally paint her black to match the TJ.

But she will always be a M416 at heart. I don't think nothing will kill her.

funny thing about the internet...

I was the other buyer that was late arriving on scene...I found this thread while looking for a trailer again. Funny. Nice to see it turned out well. If only I had been in north Alabama instead of Bham.

Bignuke Nice! Hopefully sometime soon I will be able to put up some pictures of it behind my Comanche... (I sold my TJ )

JeeperJake nice project!!!

Here's my little fleet of Bantams:

Bignuke Sorry guys, haven't been on for a long time. My dad does not plan on selling it anytime soon, it's his pride and joy. And we haven't done much with it. Never have the time to anymore.. It's sitting under my deck with my camper top from my MJ (that I'm trying to sell) on top of it.

And I probably won't have a TJ here soon. Has some rust issues and can't afford to fix. But I will have my Jeep Comanche

TFBlackout05 Price if you were to sell it possibly? I've got a military Willys that would look good in front of that!

JeeperJake re: "we already have the original cloth/vinyl canvas that came with it. "

How's the project coming? OK....ok....so I'm a jeep trailer freak.

hcarlgolden awesome find nice restore

Bignuke I will look at it, but we already have the original cloth/vinyl canvas that came with it.

Tarby That looks awesome! Now you have to get the olive drab canvas and have some bows made to put a sweet cover on it. Looking into fabbing a bow system like tonneau covers on pick up trucks. Just snaps onto lip around tub, and you put canvas over, and tie it using the tie hooks around the tub. Nice place to get ideas is beachwood canvas works in NJ. Expensive, but they do have some pics for trailer stuff. check it out.

Finished Product

Herculiner is applied on the inside of the tub. Looks a lot better than white..

Just need to do wiring to the Jeep then it's good to haul.

Bignuke Nice find.
06-06-2010 10:49 AM
Tarby Yeah-I couldn't pass up the price...guy I bought it from has a 1947 CJ 2A with a 1949 Bantam civilian trailer. He has another Bantam trailer, but was in bad shape, and he won't sell it. He needed cash, so he said he had this for sale. At first I wasn't too excited for the price, until I saw how cherry it was...snagged it without a cough!! He never used it. Sat at his house in garage since he got it in the late 90's.

Bignuke We got the tub painted! It's finally almost done!

We can now pull it behind a vehicle, but we still need to do some wiring to my Jeep and Herculine the inside of the tub..

I will post pics later today.
The fenders are black, which really stands out!
06-03-2010 09:59 PM
Bignuke Wow, nice! And for $500? Has anyone called the police on you yet? lol
06-03-2010 09:52 PM
Tarby No rust underneath at all...the rust you see is where the paint was scratched. Never was in service. It was outside, and paint faded, but still has the original michelin military tires. Can't even get them, they made them for military Uni-Mogs. Brakes work perfect. Only was made in 1993...not a whole lot of 'em out there...
06-03-2010 09:43 PM
Bignuke That looks great! Looks just like how mine was, you might want to take tub off etc. It's fun
06-03-2010 09:12 PM
Tarby great to see the trailers restored. They are a unique find. I have a CDN M101...Canadien version of U.S. Trailers...I paid $500 for it.[IMG][/IMG]

You made out well.
06-03-2010 09:03 PM
Bignuke Thanks!

We got the primer on the tub tonight!
