alstjruby03 i bought a bumper off ebay and it was a piece of junk.fell off going 50 mph on a paved logging road. those brackets need to be strong. that was quiet a ride.

03 RUBI I don't completly disagree with Jerry that stronger is better, but a swing out tire carrier isn't in the open position that often or for that long.

A single point of support with that much weight and leverage against it is inherently not going to be as reliable long-term wise as one with two or more adequate supports. A "wicked awesome" support is the minimum required for a single point of support when faced with that much weight & leverage against it.

G-Pur Yeah, but what if that one point was wicked awesome?

Jerry Bransford A tire carrier that actualy holds up more than a year or two is hard to design and manufacture, especially bumper mounted carriers. I'd be very wary of any inexpensive spare tire carrier. And personally, I've never seen a bumper mounted spare tire carrier that was ever tempting to buy.

I went with an Off-Road Fabricators spare tire carrier that mounts through the tub to rollbar base mounted mounting bases nearly ten years ago that was on my stolen TJ. I just got the final parts to mount the same type of carrier on my replacement TJ. This style carrier holds the spare tire at three points when closed and two points when open. A bumper mounted carrier only holds the spare tire at two points when closed and one point when open.

530ktm I agree. Those welds look horrible.

jgano23 i agree with everyone. some of those "welds" are just plain awful. for not much more than that $489 you could get a name brand bumper with a warranty and some kind of company backing.

Jp90Talon If you do a search on here for " thedirtworx " you should comne up a a few threads on real nice rear tire carrier bumpers.

TJfun I built my tire carrier/bumper for under $150 using 1/4 in. steel. My welds aren't beautiful but It works and I hid most of them with a heavy, rust preventative paint. If you were gonna pay that much as on ebay, you could probably buy a mig welder and the parts you need for the same cost and try doing it yourself. The best part is if you want to change anything, you can grind it off or weld it on to your liking.

CMEvans79 It is a nice looking bumper/tire carrier/jerry can carrier ... but I agree with the bad welds ... it looks like a sloppy job...

doclouie That is a nice weld. I wish I could weld like that.

Agree... A proper weld should look more like:

doclouie I noticed some of the welds in the picture and they are poor at best. If they are going to show off a poor welding job in trying to sell you something just imagine what the rest of the welds look like.
