scott howard u should by pass the vacuum on the frt diff. here are the instruction to do it.
it cost nothing takes 30 minutes and fixes the weakest part on your jeep for good.
will not effect handling or ride or mpg .


and by the way i bet the transfer case linkage just needs adjusting.

call if you need help on the spot while your working on it

Thanks a lot for the help. I missed the first off-road trip of the year this weekend because of this, but I did come back with BIG ideas for my little wrangler. I'll probably try that fix this weekend and let ya know how it goes.

flatline you could try disconecting the linkage to transfercase and manualy try to put in 4 lo, problem could be internal. there's detent ball that holds it in gear. the 231 is pretty easy to take apart. but first check linkage, it is adjustable.

How do you know if it's your Transfer Case?

Got a '95 5spd Rio Grande that I've been working on for two months now. Just found out 4WD isn't working. When you put it in 4 lo, it pops out and goes into neutral the second you start to drive. It'll go into 4 hi, but 4WD isn't working.

I've been reading up on this issue, and I first replaced the vacuum switch. Not that. I have a Posi-loc fix that I'm trying next, but I have a funny feeling it's not just the vacuum system.

Any advice? I'll get a transfer case if that's what I need, I just am trying to figure out if I need a whole NEW case, or if it's probably just something in the case itself.
