scott howard sounds like you need to flush and refill the transfer with the correct syn. gear lube and adjust the shift linkage.

good news is that a transfer can be picked up for cheap and is pretty easy to replace

94 grinding noise need a transfercase?

i bought a 1994 jeep 4.0 5 speed yesterday. i drove fine but started to make a grinding clicking noise coming from the passengerside. so i thought maybe it was the rear brakes. replaced them after i replaced them i had it on jack stands. i put it in gear and still heard the noise. it gets worse when i press on the gas and put it in a higher gear. So i think it was coming from the transfercase. I checked the fluid there was bearly any. I put some atf fluid in and i still here it. IT also does not let me shift my transfercase into 4 wheel. Could my transfer case be shot?
