|DerekM||I called the dealer for replacement cables and I am not about to be raped by them!!! does anyone sell a direct replacement for a TJ? Its going to suck to have to have cables custom made...|

none error codes.
thats why I wanted to just replace the cables so i know its done right but who sells them for a TJ??

I had this too, you got to check the other end of your battery cables. Mine came loose on the starter side, same symptoms, I reached in to move the cable and it was only hand tight.
As well, the bad connection will mess up your idle as the throttle body needs good strong voltage to operate correctly.

|PTaylor||What about any error codes? Vacuum lines? Idle Air control valve/sensor most likely the problem though....|

I could only find the universal battery terminal clamps though. it looks white trash!
I cannot find specific cables for a wrangler? I want cables that look good and have a good connection?

I dropped it off at the auto parts store and picked it up later they said it was good. it looks old but im unsure cuz ive had the TJ about 3 months now. I changed the terminals, cleaned connections and everything.
I dont know what other cheap stuff to try?

How was the battery tested? simple volt meter wont show if the battery is good or bad. I wouldn't buy a new battery until you are sure if it's good or bad. If for some reason you cannot take it somewhere to have it tested, I would at least suggest swapping batteries from another vehicle if possible, and if you do so, make sure both batteries are of the proper cranking amps recommended for the Jeep. How old is the battery in question?
Again, do some simple cheap stuff first before guessing and wasting money.

so I changed the terminals/wiring yesterday. battery tested good.
This morning when i started it, it cranked then slowed and slowed, gave it a little gas and it started up but still wouldnt idle!
So is battery next to replace?? I was thinking an optima red top but im not sure what should I run? I run lots of things of it like stereo, CB,lighting, and a winch soon. I'll look into the diehard

|Indy||I am sure it is your battery. Get it tested and if needed replacement, go with Sear's Die Hard Platinum (especially if you have OR plan to use a winch). It is on the expensive side but you will not be disappointed! Everyone is saying good things about them.|

If your luck is anything like mine, it probably wont be the problem, but it's a quick, easy, free place to start. They wont charge you anything to do it and if all comes back ok, you can ask if they can check other stuff while you are there, like maybe the computer to see if it throws out any codes.
again, if your luck is like mine, it'll be some component you never heard of buried in the frame that needs some type of Star trek spanner wrench to remove.

but when it does start, everything works, it just wont idle.
I guess i can try testing the batt and change the terminals just in case. I'll do that first.
but it seems like theres more, like the starter just shorts out everything

Changed the battery? Had it checked?
Had another Chrysler product that did the same thing. It was the battery.
Would start up but no gauges would work. It would turn over, but If you didn't know better, you would swear it was a short in the panel.
took it to auto store, had the battery checked. It was weak. Swapped out and no problems since.
easy thing to do, swing by advance and let them check it.

01 starting/idling issue
I remember when I had a cherokee a while ago with a 4.0, it started this problem where sometimes I would turn the ignition on and all the gauges would light up and everything then when i tried to turn it over, it would click and kill everything. IT would like short out somewhere??
This is exactly what my TJ is doing!!! and I dont remember how i fixed it.
Then once I do get it to start, it will not idle. I have to sit there at like 2000 rpms for a few minutes then it will idle on its own?
Also sometimes when i stop at lights, the voltmeter will go to 12v and idle all wierd.
any input here??
It shouldnt be battery right? im thinking either starter or alternator or both?????
