I do the same thing at my machinist day job. I go slow and measure stuff alot. I fix small problems before they get bigger. Yeah I never meet production, but I'm one of the only guys there that never runs scrap or gets hurt.
It's not like I'm going to get a bonus or raise by doing 2 axles in 6 hours, so p*ss on it. I take my time. If I'm not fast enough, stop giving me differential jobs
you can try installing them yourself. But if something is screwed up and they whine, it's like that now. Even if you fix it. Brand new gears that sound like crap. One guy in my 4x4 club did his own gears, and installed a locker at the same time. After 15 minutes of driving he turned his ring and pinion into spacers and ruined the locker. We call him 2wd he ended up scrapping the axle since he flushed over a grand already.
Just get someone to do it. Bite the bullet and pay. If you screw up you'll be buying more gears and an install anyway. I've done a few and I still get frustrated and mad and need help I don't advise a writeup either. You'll need someone that has done it once or twice to help you.
I'm not knocking bob's mechanical skill, but axles aren't for the faint of heart to say the least.

You know what though, while I do not have personal experience I've read up enough on the subject and regearing yourself isn't difficult, but you are going to have to set aside quite a bit of time have have a ton of patience with it. There's a nice pirate write up on the subject, and when I upgrade to my 44s (I wish) or at least my 35s (more like 215/75s) I'm really considering tackling the job myself.
I've read this whole thing through, and I have to say I definitely think it's something I can accomplish. I also definitely think it's something I can massacre.

and here's the problem with the rest of your statement, and not your problem. you do the job right most likely, thats why it takes all night. some gears will just take that long. well, most mechanics on book time, are only willing to lose so much, and after that, they say enough of this, its good enough, and slap it back in. book time on gears isn't right in my opinion. most axles pay about 5 hrs by the book. and this is assuming the tech even has the tools for the job, most don't. so you get a tech that either doesn't even have the tools, and just guesses and puts it together. or one that may have the tools, but is starting to lose his tail on the 5th hour of a regear, and decides he wants to eat this week, and has to finish this job. it will probably last through the warranty anyway.
i don't care how long it takes, its gonna leave right.

What jpdave says is true. It's very time consuming and real PITA setting them up. We do gears at my buddies 4x4 shop, and when a gear job comes in we scatter like roaches with the lights on
I've geared a few axles, and it takes me all night. I'm slower than most though, but nobody here can really do it fast. 2 things I hate working on are differentials and automatic transmissions. They absolutely SUCK.
My normal job is I'm a machinist. Setting up gears is alot like setting up the machines I work on. Lots of little details need watched, you shim, line stuff up, slap indicators on stuff, and you are doing measurements by the .001 of an inch. It's frustrating and makes me want to put a shotgun in my mouth.
To be honest, if I ever decided to re-gear my Jeep, I'll pay $1000 in labor because I don't want to do itthat's why I'm probably never gearing my Jeep for my tires. I say "hm, just a bit doggy, do the gears, or pay someone to do them? Yeah...I'm ok with a little doggish."

you gotta be careful, there's lots of shops and people that say they can do your gears, there's a lot to the job. you want a reputable place that is known for doing gears well. i've seen tons of gears done completely wrong in shops i've worked in.
1600 for an axle in a real shop is not unreal, thats about what it would cost in my shop, and i just did an independent ford 8.8 that was just over 2 grand, but the carrier was toasted as well.

hey guys Im just wondering why it costs so much to regear, my friend has a mustang and I swear he regeared from 3.73 to 4.50 and labor was 400
I realize that labor should be round twice as much because the extra gears in the front due to 4x4 and surely there is more to the dif on a 4x4 idk. Im no mechanic, whats the job entail? I thought it was taking off the dif cover and changing the ring n pinion gears but im sure theres more than that
someone here said he got quoted around 1600 and I was like
