Jeep Wrangler and Compass Break Cover

The 2007 Jeep Wrangler not only broke cover but also broke out the front window of Cobo Center in its world debut.

Every year at NAIAS the automakers try to find a new way to capture the attention of all the media in attendance, and Jeep has developed a reputation for dramatic press previews.

This year the all-new 2007 Wrangler first broke through the back wall of the stage and then drove across the show floor and out Cobo Hall, directly through a plate glass window!

Once on the sidewalk, the Jeep drove across the street, up the stairs and scaled a mountain that had been constructed to showcase the traditional Jeep capabilities of the new Wrangler.

The 2007 Jeep Wrangler and the 2007 Jeep Compass take the brand in two different directions, one old and one new. The Wrangler continues in the direction of the original Jeep—the 1941 Willys MB—by offering more off-road capability and carries on the 4-wheel-drive leadership of the Jeep brand.

The 2007 Jeep Compass, on the other hand, takes Jeep in a whole new direction with a vehicle aimed at those who spend more time in an urban environment by combining the functionality of a sport-utility vehicle with the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a compact car.

With traditional Jeep styling, the Compass features a Jeep seven-slot grille, round headlights and trapezoidal wheel openings. The windshield is steeply raked and the side profile shows the uniquely sculpted fender shapes with standard 17-inch aluminum wheels or optional 18-inch wheels.

Compass is powered by a 172-horsepower 2.4-liter engine with either a standard 5-speed manual transmission or an optional second-generation Continuously Variable Transaxle (CVT2). The Compass Limited with CVT2 offers the AutoStick feature that allows drivers to control the transmission manually so that it simulates a 6-speed automatic. The CVT2 is expected to improve fuel economy 6 to 8 percent compared to a traditional 4-speed automatic.

A full-time active 4-wheel-drive system is available and includes a “Lock” mode for use on low-traction surfaces. Standard equipment includes side-curtain airbags, ESP, traction control, fog lights and YES Essentials fabric for the interior.

2007 Jeep Wrangler Continues the Tradition
The new Wrangler offers increased ground clearance, larger wheels and tires, enahanced Dana front and rear solid axles, available next-generation Command-Trac and Rock-Trac transfer cases, new electric axle lockers, and an electro-disconnecting front sway bar.

The 2007 Wrangler also delivers more on-road refinement with an all-new frame that is 100 percent stiffer, a 2-inch-longer wheelbase, a 3.5-inch-wider track, lower spring rates, advanced shock tuning, and increased jounce and rebound travel.

The increased dimensions add up to more interior space, including 4.6 inches more hip room and 5.1 inches more shoulder room. The WrangerWrangler offers more open-air options than before with a new three-piece modular hardtop, a Sunrider soft top, and dozens of different door, top and windshield combinations.

The 2007 Wrangler receives more power with a new 3.8-liter V6 engine that delivers 205 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. New four-wheel ABS is standard on all 2007 Wranglers.
