scottsman [QUOTE=Geoff@Bestop;639727]5 on 5.5" is correct for all CJs. And they'er all 15" wheels. 4" backspacing is stock (I think - wait for some of the other people to confirm that). Stock on a 1970 is most likely a 7 inch wide wheel.

Unfortunately they turned out to be 31x10.50R15 LT M/S. Not usre if I like the big fat tire look, really prefer the tin military mud tire look!

drivebytruckerz I had an 80 CJ-5 and I put 31 X 10.50's on stock wheels. Are they the stock chromes? If so.. make sure you don't get beat out of them.. they are not cheap, especially if they have center caps that are also stock.

Pics, pics, pics...

The Dauntless motors have the firing order stamped into one of the valve covers.

Geoff@Bestop Congrats on the new ride. Those early CJs are just about the coolest vehicles ever designed. Miserable as cars, but awesome fun!

The springs are most likely sagging a bit by this point, so tire size gets a little complicated. 31" tires should fit any stock CJ, though.

A suggestion would be small cheap tires for now, and use those while you make any plans for lift. My guess would be you're going to want new springs and 33" tires fairly soon (most people do!).

And check out the firing order of your engine - if the sticker is missing, look it up. They don't use the normal order, and more than one new owner has changed plugs and messed things up!

I had that engine in a 1970 Jeepster Commando. Wish I still had the car!

1970 CJ-5 Newbie Question(s)

I just purchased a 1970 CJ-5, my first jeep. The seller tells me that it will need tires. I think wheels/rims are stock.

I have not taken delivery of it yet but would like to start pricing both wheels and tires.
I have looked online and can not find any original manufacturer’s info on this year model.

Can someone tell me, what size tire I should be look for, if I keep the stock wheels?
(What was the size and backspacing on the original rims?)

Also can someone tell me what size the bolt pattern is on this year model? I know it is a 5 lug but is it a standard 5x5.5”

These are the specs I have on the jeep I have bought:
Buick Dauntless 225 V6
Warn Overdrive
Saginaw Power Steering
GM HEI electronic Ignition
LED Tail Light
LED Reverse Lights
Dana 44 Rear Axle
Dana 30 Front Axle

Also is there some place on the web I can locate the original specs for this year model (like manufacturer’s specs/sales brochure)?
