Sounds like good advice, wscotterwin. I'm more than happy with both performance and getting around, and with the mileage, I'm *really* happy. Thanks for the tip! If (when?) it breaks, I'll put some more thought and ask for more advice about and into it
I used my GPS to make sure that my mileage was real close to the trip odometer - and it was within .10 of a mile over 5 fill-ups. And according to my GPS, my MPH is exact with the speedo. I take the miles driven, divide that by gallons pumped into the tank and the result is MPG.... and it's never been less than 21. With the AC on, doors and top on, it went up last week to 23.20. I was OK with that.... And that's all-around driving - rural, towns, and interstate... I *did* drop down to 18.8 during an off-road break a month ago - but I idled a lot.... :P

Dude, if you're getting over 20+ mpg.......leave the gears alone. Are you sure you're not using a slide rule to determine you're MPG? I have read many of these posts about people trying to improve their MPG but to achive very little success. Before I changed my gears I would get around 17mpg on the freeway.
You can easly change gear ratios but you haven't made an argument as to why you would want to. I did mine for rock crawling. You want the high end speed???? Leave it alone.

OK, so Krylon is on the shopping list! I'm sure that I have a few 1/4 nuts lying around the basement somewhere. And yeah, I've noticed that 5th gear isn't much, and we have a TON of hills around here. Will the axles allow for much of a gear change? I LOVE the low end power - it is awesome! I drive between 1000-1500 miles a week - a lot of that at 55-70 MPH. And get 21-23 MPG average now. I'd hate to lose much mileage, but if there is a way to keep the low end power, and get better highway speeds, I'm all for it.
I allow my "adult" (LOL - 22YO) daughter drive it now and then - the other night we were in it and she "Barked" the tires in 1st, 2nd, *AND* 3rd gears... on asphalt. And barked them right well... Once I yelled at her, she calmed down a bit, but I didn't expect that... I fully expected a snapped U-joint or something equally annoying, though, but no problems so far...

I have the 93 yj 4.0 and the gears I just replaced were the 3.07's. If you have the same gears (as I suspect), your 5th gear sucks with those 31" tires.
I couldn't climb a bunny slope in 5th.
My Speedo was only about 3-4 mph off with the stock speedo gear.
I went to 4.56 gears with a Detroit locker in the back. Love the gears, the locker is just ok. I wouldnt recommened the Detroit for a daily driver for sure.
My gas mileage went down a little bit around town but 5th has a real purpose now and my freeway mileage is about the same.

I agree with everyone else, small shackle lift, dana 30/35, probably 3.07:1 gears (guess....most common in those years) and a small shackle lift.
As far as your mud catchers (fender flares & molding) just paint them with "Krylon Fusion" spray paint....I did that to my 95 before just taking all that crap off and getting larger fender flares and rock railz. The Fusion paint will make things look good.
go to this link and fill it out and they can send you the build sheet for you're jeep as it rolled off the production line. Hope this helps.

According to the GPS and several of those parked speed warning signs, speedo is dead on. I guess its possible that the PO changed the speedo gear. I have noticed a rubbing sound when I turn the wheel to stop, so I don't do that anymore. I guess I need to install a couple of offsets.
Are these gears good enough for mixed driving? Mileage seems OK for what it is. I drive on the interstate often, but also take it off-road whenever I can.

dana 30/35 I will guess gears could be 3.07 to 3.73's
axle leak.. normal for dana 35.. just top it off as needed
you have a small schackle lift 1" or so would be my guess.
speedo will be off a few mpg with the 31's.
Frame looks solid in pic's
also you might have abs brakes.. as I see some sort of 2nd wire heading to the brakes...

I bought this in March - and after 10k miles, it's been a (so far) Bullet-proof toy! Now I'd LOVE to know what I've got!
This is my 1995, 4.0L, 5sp. It has 31x10.5 tires. I *think* it's got a Dana 35 in the butt and a Dana 30 up front, but I'm a noob. Forgive me.
I'd like to darken the mud catchers and I'm adding a winch this week. Do I paint them? Dye them? Let the dogs piddle on them? Get them wet? I dunno, with this "vulcanized rubber" stuff.
I *work* this truck, so it's not a "curb-crawler" or a "mall whatever". I also use it for (actual paying) work, so it gets about 2-3 trips a week, from 200-500 miles per trip. I average 21 MPG, with the top on or off, A/C on or off... go figure...
Any thoughts as to what I have would be *VERY* much appreciated - my additions include me pulling out my MIG welder and making a new front and rear bumper (for the cows - we have a dairy farm and cows are a challenge on occasion) and anything else I can think to weld..... I will post pics
I plan on a new front bumper this or next weekend, and the rear sometime after that (cows are not the smartest creatures and sometimes need a "suggestion").. then a trip to Tractor Supply to get an axle and tires and build a 4x8 trailer (thankfully plywood comes in that size!)
Do I have a lift?
Do I really have a 35 and a 30 in the thing?
Are these non-descript tires OK?
Should I worry about the oil stains underneath?
What am I missing?
