Well then...I suggest you build a LCG (Low center of Gravity) Wrangler something like this - start out with an '05 or '06 Unlimited:

1. Dynatrac Pro-Rock Dana 60 axles locked with ARB air lockers, Eaton E-Lockers, or Ox Lockers front and rear
2. 2 1/2" Old Man Emu suspension lift
3. 1 1/4" JKS Body Lift 1"motor mount lift
4. Slip yoke eliminator and cv drive shaft (Tom Woods) - (may not be necessary, but what the hell, you can afford it)
5. AEV or similar (Rokmen) Hi-line tube fenders (allows for big rubber without a lot of lift - keeps you stable on off camber stuff)
6. Rear corner armor with stryker bars (comp cut optional) (flush the tail lights with 4" LEDs)
7. Rokmen belly up skid (engine and t-case) and gas tank skid
8. 37" - 40" Goodyear MTRs with Kevlar and Walker Evans aluminum beadlock wheels (35s are so yesterday)
9. Rokmen upper and lower front and rear control arms (most expensive on the market, but worth every penny)
10. Currie steering (best there is)
11. Vanco big brake kit (only if you plan on stopping)
12. Rokmen Mercenary bumpers, rocker guards
13. Warn power plant winch with synthetic line
14. Steering box skid (they all work okay, and unfortunately they are pretty cheap)
15. Full roll cage
16. Premium sound system so you can rock your tunes on the trail
17. Uniden CB and Firestix or Wilson antenna
18. Tear out the carpet and have the entire interior sprayed professionally by Line-x or Rhino (you could just roll on Herculiner but that's so much cheaper)
19. Oh yeah - Currie anti rock sway bar

I'm sure I missed a few things, but this should get you started toward a pretty kick ass Jeep.

Haha. My first car was a '60 VW Bug. Always working on that dumb thing. Electrical was looking like spagetti, motor leaked oil, interior was worn, but the Bug was a fun car to drive. Loved the car, but not the hassle of keeping it going.

jskinn27 hah my fist car was a beat up 91 chevy s10, then i bought my 97 tj sport for 8k about 2 months ago. loooovee it. anyway driving that diesel was probably a smooth ride, wranglers are anything but. theyre rough you feel every bump, but youll love that once you start driving one. once you find a jeep you want, wait..because once you buy your jeep youll find the most perfect one for you. happens everyone.

To the original poster...Lifting your jeep over 3" is gonna cost you alot more money, and alot more headaches and mechanical issues than you may think. A bad impression that alot of non jeep, or new jeep owners have is they you just throw in a 4" lift and huge tires and be done with it..NOT TRUE.
I think theres a fine line between the 2.5" mark and the 3" mark. Stay under 3 and you can still run 33" tires and you can go with a smaller spring lift or even a Budget Boost which is made up of coil spacers and new shocks. I personally think that is the best way to go for someone who doesnt plan to do much offroading, if any at all.

Once you go over 3" and start getting up to 35" tires...thats when you may start needing things like extended brake lines, adjustable track bars, possibly replacing control arms with adjustable ones, sye kits for the transfer case, expensive driveshafts, bigger gears in the differentials and heavy duty axles for the bigger tires. The taller and bigger you go, the taller and bigger your pile of parts receipts get.

For someone like you who's just in college and probably not gonna be doing any offroading, I would go with a budget boost coil spacer lift and some 32 or 33" tires and leave it at that. If you actually get into wheeling your jeep..then you could start upgrading to better or bigger parts that are required for what your doing with the jeep.


Theres the "right way" to do things, the "wrong way" to do things and then there is the "half assed" way to do things...

thats exactly why my first car was a $500 73' Nova that was falling to pieces! haha.

but like everyone is saying, do some serious research before you set your mind on anything.. personally I would say if your not going to wheel it then settle for 33's and don't worry about new axels and re-gearing.. that would be a ton of money that would really go to waste if the only reason you had it was for regular driving.. but that is just my opinion.. TJfun Here is the deal with the 35s. You will be just fine if you get a 4" lift. That is what I use and it ran me about $700+. I also installed it myself which saved $$. The problem with the tires is when they start to wear out, you will feel the death wobble. Everybody will advise of what to replace, may be wearing out, to get an alignment, and so on. So far I found that rotating the tires as one should helps a bunch. My neighbor, however, runs 33s on his YJ and hasn't had any trouble yet. We both run BFG mud terrains but I'm thinking of trying Goodyear MTRs next but I like to play in the hills and on the rocks a bunch.

As everyone else mentioned though, take your time and spend your money slowly and wisely. Do a bunch of research on an item and talk to a bunch of folks like you just have. That will save you a LOT of money.

IndyJeepMan Well before you catch anymore E-asswhoopin, you dont need all that now, if youre going to rarely wheel it.

Honestly a 2" spacer and 31's with quick disco's will get you alot of places, they only thing the 35's will help with is clearance issues and youll have a wider stance.

For what you are going to want to do offroad a near stock jeep would be just right. But what do I know? I dont have money to throw around.

Before and after, no lift. Same tires new rims and other cosmetics, mostly what I've removed over time. MAYBE a grand in it. Total appearance change. Theres some more done but its not shown.

A Wrangler with it's short wheelbase is going to handle much differently than an F350.... just sayin. Test drive lots of em to get a feel for them. They are unusual beasts.

Aothman9 Thanks for the info once again. The closest I've ever driven something that lifted was my friend's F350 Diesel. It was an amazing feeling driving something that high thru the highway.

all three, itll be noisy and bump you out of your seat if you hit a bump. You know just because you love jeeps doesnt mean youll love driving one. I hope you get a jeep and love it but i would be careful on lifting it that high and those big tires without ever driving one. My advice would be if you had a friend or something that was one you should test drive it. But anyway you'll find that driving a jeep wrangler is one of the best experiences you will have.

Only if you don't buy one with a D44. D35's don't last long with 35" tires. Do your homework and you'll know what to look for, what you need, and what you want when you find it. This is not really the best time of year to shop for a Jeep. Fall and early spring are better.

jskinn27 Firefighter777 had great advice. I also have 33s on a 4.5 in lift with 4.10 gears and I rock crawl too. 33s will do you just fine. D44 rear is pretty pricy. The guy I bought my jeep from spend a good 2k on it another 2k on the lift. 10k in total. Also look around before you jump on a buy. You can always rock 33s with a 4" lift or so for a while THEN upgrade.

Aothman9 Trust me, I love jeeps just as much as anyone else on this forum does. I said i wont be using it off road in the beginning, just till i get the hang of things. when you said it wont be comfortable, will it be bumpy, shaky, or vibrate?

InfernoGirl You need to spend some time reading here. You'll find that to run 35" tires you need a D44 rear axle, gears and lots of $ for lifts. Better to look for the TJ's that are available in your area, regardless of color, and find one that has all the basics you need to build it how you want. Color is the last thing you should be worried about. If it's all that important you can always have it painted, it doesn't sound like $ is much of a problem for your parents.

firefighter777 If you wish to make your baby "growl" get spilt headers, muffler of your choice and high flow cat. anything else for your engine like air intakes, throttle body spacers would be a waste of money, jeeps are very well engineered. if you really want more horsepower get a bigger engine or regear after getting a lift, nothing else will have a very good cost/performance ratio. the exhaust work should give you more pedal. if you are not going to off road much or never why get 35's that seems silly to me. I have 33's and I rock crawl, mud, trek through the woods,etc. but if you must have 35's you will need a 5 inch lift, which is costly and NO 5 inch lift kit and 35 inch tires will be comfortable on the road especially comparing it to a civic that you have drove. As im sure you know, modding your jeep is EXTREMELY expensive. not sure how a college freshman could afford it unless you are spoiled by your parents. and in my opinion dont ask others what you should get it will be YOUR jeep. and everyone has different taste and opinions. lastly if you are buying this jeep to impress your friends or girls, get a mustang or a similar muscle car but if you really want to be a jeeper...welcome to the fourm.

03 RUBI Make sure you have the gears to pull 35" tires or you will be very disappointed. Even a Rubicon with 4.10 gearing wouldn't work well with 35's IMO
