Igrok I'd love to get over there with y'all, but I'm working weekends the whole month of July, however, August is fair game!

EdJonesJeeper Axle on and ready to wheel! I'm down for as soon as July 10, the 17 is our meet and greet. Anybody think we can get a group that quick!

tarheel Looks like a great place!

Remember to teach them young that seatbelts are a must even on beginner trails. You'll be glad later when it gets more difficult.

EdJonesJeeper Glad to hear its not just a dirt road and there is some difficulty to it. I like that!

Seawalker No finding it was easy. Just past the 8 mile marker west bound on I-40 at the end of the guard rail you turn off onto a gravel road. After about 1/4 mile the gravel ends and it is just dirt to the top. I read where this is considered a beginner trail if that is true than I am not up to the beginner level yet. But we had a great time and will definitely do it again. Good learning experience.

Question for Edjonesjeeper

Edjonesjeeper I met you back on Memorial Day weekend at a gas station on the exit of The Flats. Don't know if you remember a guy talking to you about The Flats. I live in Ga but have access to a house in Arden to stay in from time to time I'd like to try out the Flats in Sept just dont want to go alone looking for someone to meet up with to go if you are going I would like to meet up with your group to go then.

EdJonesJeeper Aaehhh!!!! Axleshafts backordered till 2nd week July! I'm totally screwed. Hate I'm gonna miss this trip.

Mike u can still borow tire if needed. We should meet at fat cats and have a beer anyway.

ashevilleyjmike Glad you found the place. I'm not sure about that turn you made...I've only been there once and we went the downhill direction. If you'd kept climbing, it pops out on a farm, which leads to pavement on top of the mountain. That road takes you down and back to 40. From the topo map (look up a Google satellite image) and what I remember, you follow the creek the whole way in either direction.
Other trails around Asheville: If you know anyone in Candler, there are many miles of 4x4 trails there. You'd have to go with a "local" as a lot of it goes on private property....it's all around the base of Mt. Pisgah. The "locals" I know are crazy rednecks and I'm not going wheeling with them.

EdJones: We can postpone this trip Saturday if necessary...no problem.

Mike,

I really appreciate this information. My friend and I departed N Asheville yesterday and we found this trail. There was a light drizzle and the creek was moving pretty fast. I had some "concerning" moments in my stock 1995 Wrangler Sahara, but overall she did very well.

There is a point where the road forks left or you can go straight. We kept straight in an effort to keep climbing the mountain, but we were unsure we made the right call and turned around once the rain picked up. It was late in the day and we didn't want to spend the night because we got stuck in the thick mud or crossing the growing creek.

What is at the end of that trail? Can you recommend any other trails around Asheville that you can have tried that you think a stock Wrangler could handle? I have four fairly new Goodyear Fortera 75R15 on it.

Again, I appreciate all of the info...take care.

cabnboy I hope y'all get to go and will post trip stories.

EdJonesJeeper I'm down in Arden as well, right off sweeten creek. My axle shafts didn't come in yet so I might be pressed for time. Might have to leave work early one day and put it all together! Friend supposed to let me borrow that SWR thing sometime this week.
06-02-2010 08:07 AM
ashevilleyjmike EdJones - Too bad about your 35, let me know if you can still make it.

Who else is coming? Biltmore Hardees is out of our way (Arden/Bent Creek) so I was thinking meeting somewhere further down 40, like Candler or Canton?

If we get done early enough, I may head up to Max Patch before going home.

EdJonesJeeper Sheered 3 teeth off spider gears in my Dana 35 at the flats last weekend. Got a 44 going to pick up friday. Have to put axle shafts in it and bolt it in this weekend (hopefully). If all goes well should have no prob still making it to hurricane creek. Noticed couple guys going to Uwarrie that same weekend. Think I'll wait to put in front locker before that trip.
05-22-2010 09:04 AM
EdJonesJeeper Well can everyone meet in Asheville and convoy. I know AppSt prob can't but we can still meet him exit b4. Meet at hardees in biltmore 10 am?
05-21-2010 07:39 AM
ashevilleyjmike Yeah, we could get breakfast before and have lunch out on the trail somewhere. My buddy will be out of town, so no after-ride cookout. Real nice stream and I hear there's good fishing in it.
05-20-2010 03:42 PM
EdJonesJeeper Great map Mike! We should plan to meet at the exit before the trail and grab a late breakfast or early lunch.
05-20-2010 11:08 AM
Sandymess Not sure if i'm scheduled off that weekend yet, should find out this week. If so, the JK and i will be there!
05-20-2010 10:10 AM
ashevilleyjmike Scanned from Gazetteer.
05-20-2010 10:10 AM
EdJonesJeeper Yes it's on my old stock 5 hole jeep rim. And I'm all about sum grill!
05-20-2010 09:19 AM
ashevilleyjmike Well then, if it's 5x4.5 pattern it looks like we're in business. I might take you up on that if I don't have one by then.

I'll mark it on the calendar and round up a buddy or two. My friend Howie lives right over the mountain on Fines Creek. Maybe I can set up a cookout afterwards?.....he'd love that.
