Could some members check under the hood for me?

Routing of hoses to heater core. I have the 98 TJ shop manual and it shows the hose from the thermostat connects to the bottom pipe of the heater core. The hose that is attached to the metal pipe on the engine side goes to the top pipe on the heater core. On my TJ the hose from the thermostat is attached to the top pipe instead of the lower one. The only reason I noticed it is because there's a small crack/bulge in the hose where it attaches to the thermostat. The hoses themselves are soft and pliable and the heat works but not as hot as it used to. Sooo if some members with 6cyl TJ's could look under the hood and report back I would appreciate it. A picture would be even better if possible. I'm curious, could incorrect routing of the heater hoses cause a hose to split? Also, if the hoses are in fact routed incorrectly would the heater work at all?? Sorry the post is so long.

Cheers, John
