|pokey||I just remove my hand from the shifter and adjust the dials while I'm accelerating.|

Actually the feature about the shift positions, aligning with the heater controls, was picked up by a reviewer of the Jeep Wrangler back in about 2004. I came across it while doing some research re buying a 2003 back then.
Ever think you were in reverse and found you were in 4th instead? lol

but I am concerned that you've been keeping your eyes off the road long enough to notice something as odd as this.

|Ageless Stranger||I hadn't noticed. But I will now. I usually know what gear I'm in though.|

Have you ever noticed?
Have you ever noticed how when your hand is on the 5 speed manual shifter, in your TJ, that your your index finger will point toward the blower speed dial when in 1st and 2nd, toward the tempersture dial when in 3rd an 4th, and toward the function dial when in 5th?
Have you ever noticed, when in 5th gear, that with your fist on top of the shifter for steadiness, that your index finger can scroll through the preset buttons on your radio very easily?
I have often looked at my index finger location to see what gear I'm in. Great design. Was it deliberate?
