If you want to push your rig to it's limits, sell it NOW! Then buy a built rig. If I had it to do over again, I would have just bought a full buggy for the AZ rocks. I started with a bone stock 01 TJ Sport(brand new), and have dumped about 25K into my rig AFTER the initial purchase cost. Granted I have done a lot of steps to get here, over a long period of time, and have a lot of good knowledge of my rig of what it will and will not do, but for $50K, I could have bought a sweet buggy.
The cool thing is everything done to mine has been done by me. I have the D60s, 111" WB, 39" Reds, etc, and also have about 6 years of wheeling my Jeep in various stages under my belt.

|snwchris||Thanks... yea had plans to wheel locally, but have to fix the tow rig... found a bad axle u-joint and in digging farther found the hub assembly bad as well.... LOL yea fun|

A Rubi is a SOLID place to start building.You have front and rear D44's and airlockers, while my 98 Sport has a D30/D35 with open diffs i have to spend some major cash to get what your came with!! Not to mention the gears already in the axles and T-case!!When people ge!t a Rubi, they are ahead of the game 95% of the time, and you my friend are already ahead of a ton of people,including myself,on this site. Also nice to see another OH guy, i go to Haspin acers usually every month, im going their July3rd and 4th.|

Believe me I like the the challenge of hitting some of these same trails on my 33's and making it up after a few trys. But it's almost starting to seem like the standard tire size needed is 35's or 37's now adays depending on where you go or what trails you hit.
I guess one of my main reasons as well, is that with the market so bad you see some built rigs being sold cheaper then they normally would. Although D60's are still expensive... lol

Good luck with that. That is if you sell your D44s and everything else to help offset some of the costs. Then you might make $6-8K out of pocket.
I built my rear D60 as cheap as possible and it took a long time to get parts together. Got pretty much everything new, but from other wheelers. 35 spline chromos, spool, 5.86, discs, truss, good cover, HD brackets, etc for $2400. My front build just cost me around $10K. But that included a front stretch, full hydro, 39" Reds, coilovers, etc. I sold about $6K worth of stuff to help though. I got a LOT of these parts for cheap or free too. Got the PSC full hydro for about 65% of new, got the front arms for free, got the RCV shafts($2K new) as the first test shafts, gears half price, etc.
If you plan on sticking with 35-37s on 4.5 trails(9 on some scales), build your Rubi.
If you plan on 39s and stupid trails, buy a built rig and save about 50%.

Yea, already have truck & trailer, it's in my sig.
Makes wheeling trips alot easier. I've spent many, many, many times wrenching late saturday nights or sunday mornings in order to get home and about a 1 1/2yrs ago got my truck & trailer.

Keep it, you seem like an impatient person lol.
Yeah it will take some time to get it where you want it, but that builds a bond between you and the jeep. And plus like others said its only been yours, its never been misstreated you know whats its been through and if you get something thats all decked out have fun driving that beast for 7 hours.
So you are going to need a truck and trailer.. Just keep it and build a smaller rig, unless you already have a truck and trailer. 35's and two locked, reinforced d44's will do almost all you could ask for really.

|cru9||Keep it if it drives good and the motor and trans are strong..You never know what you will get buying something used. Most people are selling it for a reason and that reason might not be in your favor.|

I'm on the fence, I would love to start with a stock rubicon. But at the same time if you know what you want and it's out of your current price range to build yourself and somebody is looking to sell their jeep at a loss.
I have seen some nicely built jeeps go for a fraction of what was invested. But I would do a serious inspection and ask for receipts.

03 Rubi Debate (Build or Sell)
I have an 03 Rubicon that’s pretty much paid off or will be very soon and trying to debate about keeping the Rubi and building it up… or selling and buying a 4seater buggy or built Jeep. I’ve seen a few 4seaters now in my price range as well as some built Jeeps w/ D60’s. The cost of D60’s alone will put me at $5k - $7k which would be out of pocket expense or sell the Rubi and buy a built rig outright.
This year we’ve only taken a few trips due to our 9mo son, but next year since he’ll be bigger it will be easier to get out atleast once a month from April to November.
The typical places I wheel at range from 2hrs to 7hrs drive time so I can pretty much reach a few nice 4wd parks in the OH/PA/IN/KY/WV area.
03 Rubi build plan if I keep… thinking 35’s to 37’s
TNT Hy-Line (front)
TNT Rear Ext. Corners
RCV Front axles
4.88 or 5.13 gears
Clayton LA upgrade
This would put me at about $6k… including gear installation
I do plan on a trip out west as well... either Rubicon Trail or Moab within the next year as well.
