|Wildkarde||x2 to kate's post, go to the tire manufacturer's website and look up the specs for that specific tire, you may find that they are 31.4's or something like that.|

This is like saying a budget boost is not safe. Or a lift is not safe. Or a new air filter is not safe.
Adapters, like spacers, are perfectly fine. But....just like ANY OTHER MODIFICATION, you need routine maintenance on them. Check them every 3K miles and you will be fine. I have run them for 4+ years, and have NEVER had an issue. Buy the quality ones though, like Spidertrax. Not the cheap Chinese made ones.

Here is the skinny from my perspective.
Get the tires off the JK and buy a set of 5 on 4.5 to 5 on 5 adapters and run them. What a lot of people are not taking into consideration.....the JKs use a lot more backspacing on their stock wheels than a TJ wheel. The 1.25" thick adapters will be fine with the 6.25" BS on the JK wheels(just like a TJ wheel with 5" BS). That way, when you do have to buy some new tires later down the road, you already have the 17" wheel that most tire manufacturers are starting to lean towards. 15" tire selection is slimmer than it used to be, and will only get slimmer.

|lonur1||I don't know much about bolt adapters but if they're anything like spacers then you ride will not be as good as stock. I had spacers on my last vehicle and I felt them a little in the ride and they are not that safe. That is why some of the big tire retail shops refuse to put them on your ride.|

The almost universal position throughout threads is that an UNlifted TJ can accommodate a tire that is 31" tall by 10.5" wide without rubbing.
a 255x75x17 tire is 32" tall by 10" wide.

In short....based on the dominant opinion that 31x10.5 is the max you can mount without lifting OR rubbing.....that translates into roughly 265/75/15.
So the tires you are looking at are too big.
HOWEVER....the coolest thing about Jeeps is their adaptability.
You CAN mount tires from a John Deer combine if you reallywant to.
Its just a question of whether you are willing to adapt your vehicle or your driving to meet the tire.....or if you will find the tire that meets your driving needs.
So, yeah...you CAN boot-strap those 255/75/17's on your TJ. You will need to adapt the lug pattern. You will need to adapt your driving to increase your turning radius since you cant turn the wheels as far to either side. and you will have to adapt your driving to creep over speed bumps streight-on to reduce suspension flex....to avoid rubbing.
My recommendation: Sell the 255's on craigslist, and apply to proceeds towards buying the right tires to fit your needs.

That's roughly a 32x10" tire, so it'll fit stock, but if you go over much more than a speed bump you'll rub the flares. The width is fine for a stock TJ. You will need adapters as you know to fit JK Moabs on a TJ. So in essence, yes you'll be fine if you stay on road till you get some lift on it.
And as long as the bolt pattern is dealt with it doesn't make any difference the diameter of the wheel.... You could put 22's on it if you wanted to, of course you would be shunned by the Jeep community, but you could do it!

The tires say 255/75/R17 as they are mounted on stock 2009 17" rubicon wheels, and I understand I would need lug pattern adapters. Ed, when you say nothing else but a 15" wheel will ever fit, is that truly the case? My guess is with the adapters, it will be a close, close fit, but I wanted to see if anyone could confirm it would work without a lift or not. Thanks again guys!!

|EdJonesJeeper||Your tires should say...xx/xx/r15 for stock. That means 15" rims. Nothing else will ever fit so always be on the look for 15" tires.|

Having recently gone through the tire-evolution gauntlet. I learned that there is more to bigger tires than simply rubbing.
This is old news to yall, but any noobs like me are well advised to think carefully about their plans.
Aside from a marginal decrease in gas mileage, bigger tires also generate more stress on axles. This leads to sheared axles if you're prone to accelerating like a 15 yr old.
Bigger tires apparently effect accelleration, passing and climbing performance.
Bigger tires clearly effect turning radius.
All of which may be acceptable, depending upon your intentions, but you need to know about them before breaking out the check-book.
Lastly, by the time to get the jk tires and wheels to work on the TJ....you will have spent more than getting new tires and wheels that are designed to fit properly.

If you do a little research, you will find that tires bigger than 31's are not advised without some sort of lift. According to the site that I linked, these tires measure in at 32's.
As for the rims, they should work, if you have the correct adapters, just make sure that they are good quality.

|InfernoGirl||The wheels won't fit, the bolt pattern is different. TJ's are 5x4.5" JK's are 5x5". If you want to buy adapters or new wheels then you can use the tires.|

TJ stock suspension would be 31" tires, not sure how that goes metric wise. I run 31s with no rub, but I haven't done anything too crazy off road, but I wouldn't expect much if any rub on the 31s.

i think 31's are the biggest you can go on a stock suspension without much tire rub.

noob needs help!
I just picked up a 2001 4.0 auto and it looks like I need new tires... I have access to a set of 255/75/R17 on 2009 Rubicon wheels for dirt and need to know if I can fit them on my stock tj? I searched and it seems like I probably need at least a 2" lift, but if I can run them stock for a bit that would really help. Besides bolt pattern adapters, do I need anything else to run these (lift)? Thanks in advance to anyone who can clarify for me!!
