lancetkenyon Rubis run them stock. The swap is not cheap though, and unless you really wheel a lot, and are planning on bigger tires, I do not know if the cost would warrant the swap. It would be easier and probably cheaper to do the Treaflex Teralow kit for your NP231.

wasurfer86 theres this big red and silver tag that says 231 on it, cant win em all. do you think the 241 would be too much stress for the stock tjs axles?

its got 33's. the previous owner didnt mention anything about it so its probably just stock. one can hope right

lancetkenyon 02 TJs did not come with one stock. Unless the previous owner wheeled a lot, with big tires, I would highly doubt it has a 4 to 1 kit in it. It is amazing how low 1st gear with 4.88s and a 2.72 t-case really is. What tire size are you running? I am betting if it you bought it with anything less than 35s, I can almost gaurantee it does not have a 4 to 1.

that would make a huge difference. is there any specific way to tell if you have that 4:1 kit added to the NP231? my jeep in first is like a tank, im just wondering if its just the 4.88's or maybe ive got something else that helps to give it that extra power.

Jerry Bransford Good explanation. Another way to look at it is 4Lo in the TJ's 231 is like starting off in 2nd gear but 4Lo in the Rubicion's 241OR being like starting off in 1st gear.

lancetkenyon A stock Wrangler(non-rubi) t-case is an NP231 with a 2.72 to 1 gear reduction in 4 low(multiply 1st gear ratio x axle gear ratio x 2.72). The Rubis use an NV241OR t-case, which has a 4 to 1 gear reduction ratio, giving a deeper overall gearing ratio. A deeper ratio means slower wheel speed and more torque application. Slower is better in the rocks.

Oh....and drinking the water in Mexico was a mistake too. So was the "show" I attended down there.

Oh crap you are right Lance, the Rubi does come with 4.10 from the factory. Oh well, it was early and I was just getting my first sips of coffee down then. Thanks for catching that.

4.56 really isn't too low for 31" tires either. That's how the Rubicon comes, 4.56 and the metric equivilent tire size to 31".

Be aware that the RPMs this type of chart shows are for a 1.0:1 final drive ratio. In other words, if you have a 5-speed transmission, the rpms in that chart show what engine RPMs you would have while driving in 4th gear. So in 5th gear, your RPMs will be substantially lower than what the chart shows.

lancetkenyon All 4 poppers came with 4.10s in the D30/35s. If you plan on going to larger tires, you should really try to wait to do the gears, or you will be spending money twice. For 31s and a 4.0, 4.10s are great, 3.73s are OK. For 33s, go with 4.56s, and for 35s, go with 4.88s. But with a D35 rear axle, might want to think about an axle swap with 33+" tires.

Also, if you are going to gear it, consider putting lockers in it. Might as well pay for the labor one time. Remember this though, if you go above 3.73s, you will need a different carrier than the 3.07 stock came with.

bjtoth (New tire size / Old tire size) x Old Ratio = New ratio for torque. Add some for extra rolling resistance of wider tires and increased rotational inertia of heavier tires. This will get you close to stock performance. Go up (numerically) from there for more torque, but higher highway rpm. Hope this helps.

AzTJ With only 31's 4.11 should be a fine gear ratio. Instead of buying a new carrier and everything, try and find a 4cyl TJ and take the gears from it, if they are still in good shape... and as long as you have a D35 in the rear.

dummy ? about gears

ok i have a 01 tj manual with 3.07 gears just put on a fresh set of 31" tires on today i'm trying to fine out what gears i should go with i've been doin a bit of research and it seems i'm in a toss up between 4.10 and 4.56 i do plan on lifting it more and adding bigger tires in the future but it will be a while before all that happens so i'm just trying to get as close to stock gearing with maybe a lil more low end for wheeling as i do go off road quite a bit any opinions will be appreciated thanks
