|A_Mason||I think the plastic pieces you are referring to are the panel door levers? I had to replace one of mine recently. You can gain a little better access by removing the kick plate and the metal mounting bracket from under your steering wheel. There are two different types of door levers; a long one and a short one. I ordered mine from here: XtremeTerrain.com Jeep Parts - Heater and Defrost Ducts To remove the old ones I threaded a long screw into the end of the piece that was left in hole and gently pulled it out. Put the new ones in and connect the acctuator arms. I wouldn't necessarily pay much attention to the item names on the new door levers...just match what you need to the pictures. I bought the one titled "Upper Defrost Door Lever" to replace what I'm pretty sure is my upper defrost door lever but it was the wrong one. I had to buy the other one which is longer and has the arm in a different position. Regardless; there are only two different arms available and this place sells them for the best price that I could find including shipping.|

|DevilDogDoc||Those plastic pieces break all the time as they did on mine. What I did was pill the pods out and manually set the flaps to blow on my face. I lost the defrost which I never use anyway and it cost me nothing!|

Found a broken piece...
First of all I am going to try to include a picture with this post....
I went digging around under the driver's side of the dash and found a broken black plastic piece (actually 2 broken pieces that looked like they were connected at one time).
Who knows if I attached the picture correctly..... Anyway. It is the small black piece that is right below the vacuum switch thing (I don't really know what I am talking about).
Any ideas about what that is? It is a BITCH to contort yourself to get in a position to see anything under there. Also, I looked in the area of DISTORTEDTJ's reply pic and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary.
I'm gonna bitch about Haynes for a second.... why the hell do they not have ANY information about this in their shop manual? I couldn't find anything to do with the vent control mechanisms anywhere.

Defrost is the default setting for a vacuum leak in the system.
First pop your hood and check the vacuum line off the center of the intake manifold. Common issue for it to pop off or just dry rot.

It's probably a vacuum line that came loose. Like Jma said, it's not that hard to get back behind the climate controls. I always tell everyone to buy a Factory Service Manual published by Chrysler for every year TJ. You can get them on ebay. Forget Haynes or Chilton. They cover too many years.
Anyway, all of the vacuum lines begin at the climate control knob on the right, the selector switch. I think pre '99 it was a lever, not a knob so I'm not sure what that looks like. Make sure all of those colored hoses are pressed onto the back of that knob tight.
From there they go to different vent doors etc. That's where you need to look at the factory manual. All the schematics and everything are in there.

It seems to mainly come out of the defrost. Some air will come out of the floor vent if I move the switch that way. I will try to dig under the dash and see what's up. I had my water line rupture in the front yard yesterday and the repair guys broke my natural gas line while digging up the water line today..... I will report back when I get a chance and have running water again at the house......

|legman68||Depending on your year, sounds like maybe the doors aren't operating right. Remove the panel under the steering wheel, 4 screws i think. Then acrobatically look under toward the ac controls and you'll see actuators that open and close as you move the position switch. With mine, one had just become loose, so when I moved from defrost to vents, no defrost. I just jammed the rod back in, fixed!|

its fairly easy to get the center of the dash out. the defroster vent just pops off and there are 2 screws ontop of the center piece above the radio and one behind the ashtray, take those out and the radio bezel just pops off just like the defroster vent. from there you can remove the radio and heater controls with just a few screws and you should be able to get back to the controls. you can also take out the glove box.
if you need to take out the gauge cluster its just a few screws on top and a few behind the panel under the steering wheel.

|Brad[LK1]||I have a similiar problem..the insert for the air position broke and it slides out from time to time....Does air only come out of the defroster vent or is there a loud whistle when on high?? if so that might be your problem...Report back and i can tell you more if thats the case|

When I turn on my air vent/heater, I can hear the blower motor, a vacuum engage and a flap move but no air comes out of the main front facing vents. I am a relatively new Jeep owner and am somewhat intimidated by the instructions to remove the dash from my Haynes manual (it implies that I will have to perform surgery to take it all off).
Any ideas as to why there is no air flow through the vents? Thank in advance for any help. This forum rocks... my wife is beginning to be annoyed at how much time I have spent recently on this site
