sunshine22 Hi. I've been scouring the web looking for advice on buying a used wrangler. I found what I think is a pretty good deal on an 06 sport model with 82k miles. My problem pertains to what is on the jeep. It has a 3" RC lift, 33" BFG A/T tires, cold air intake, special muffler and some other odds and ends. What do you have to look out for when buying a wrangler with stuff like this on it? Should I steer away?

thanks,
Kyle

doctahjones might be an old thread, but i really appreciate the info. about to go look at a 89 that seems like it's too cheap.

and who cares if there's grammar/spelling mistakes. it's about info, not perfection. and last time i looked, a -proper- jeep isn't perfect, it will have scratches and dings and such

P0234 Frame rust should be #1.

SigChiPsi One thing you forgot. If I may be so bold? You should turn on the lights, click them over to bright, and turn the heater all the way up. If the lights don't cut out your in luck.

sjsnyder226 I wish I had this when i bought my YJ, it's doing great, but there were some problems i didn't expect to find. But at $660 for a 91 that drives, I just wanted to get that baby home before the guy changed his mind.

can you elaborate on the "On a 2.5 up grade to the 4.0 Throttle body" ? what are the advantages?

also, what kind of job is it to replace the Passenger Side engine mount? could i do it w/o an engine hoist?

thanks

rogertc1 Don't forget to toake these words of wit from Rain360 with you...

6. Stock Seats.
Reason If they look like shit put new one's in. and i know they do they have rips and are mostlikely yellow. perferably ones that recline and arent made of ball sweating materail as jeeps are and should be natural AC. Also the standerd seat brackets rust and the seats internail support's fail. And later on you woun't have money to. Jeep Just empty every Pocket you will always want something cooler then seats, tires, lift, speakers that you won't beable to hear any way, ect.

texasoffroad im going to look at some jeeps tomarow, im printing this and taking it with me. thanks!

rogertc1 I expect stuff to be wrong on a YJ with over 100,000 miles. Most problems can be fixed thus the low prices on YJ's. The main thing is to check the fram to make sure it is not rusted out. Minor rust can be welded or renforced. Jeeps are easy to work on as compared to other vehicles that also require maintenance.
Please don't make a sticky of OP. Not prefessional.

hermesgrafix Thanks for the info. Wish I would have gotten this sooner! Bought my Jeep from my Boss, got a good deal but really did not know what to loot for. Got the cracking on the hard top and corrosion. But got a good deal and know what kind of mechanic he was so I know the quality of the work that was done was good! Mike

beachnjeep if you do sticky it then do a spell check to make it look more professional or vocab correct.
07-12-2010 02:45 PM
beachnjeep ah heck just buy a new one then, and now no problems.

instead of tapping if you think it has bondo try a magnet, works much better.

Kohrs93 Great thread. I'm sure this will help out many people. This should be stickied.

Rian306 Forgot to mention stock axel/diff bearings in the rear always go bad so check that.

Also Upgrade your tool collection, garage, and alloted time to spend working on your jeep.

Final note: Jeeps cost money, and you will have to work on if for the rest of your life. They eat gas, there loud, the ride isn't that nice, Your Jeep will rattle, poor airodynamics. but it will last you as long as you take care of it. Owning a jeep is a way of life. Its a community, If you see another jeep on the side of the road you stop and help out. You must wave to other jeeps except to the JK and other dark-side none-leaf spring jeeps. Owning a jeep will be the best desicison you will ever make. You'll smile everytime you drive behind the wheel, It gives you a sense of freedom. Its an american tradition forged from war.

Other people just won't understand you. Its a Jeep thing tell them. Driving in the rain or winter with no top, Making your own exits from crowed events, Mud everwhere except were the wipers go. banging and swearing in your garage at 3o'clock in the morning, People telling you that they think you have an exhaust leak, and asking you if your suppost to use a hammer there. It's not so much because your trying to be diffrent. Its more because you can. You will do things that other drivers would never think about doing in or to there cars in there right mind. And if they do try, to take their hummer to follow you. Their going to get stuck and you can drive away laughing.

sorry for spelling and grammer. mehh

Thing's to know when Buying a Used Jeep Wrangler YJ

I hope this get sticked....

Things To Look For when buying a jeep wrangler YJ:
1. body damage, tap around the jeep logo and the fenders for bondo.
2. Check for rust, Under carpet, floormates, by drain plugs the side wall inside where the jeep logo is, the engine compartment under the master brake cylinder, shock mounts, axel mounts, gas tank rust, wheel wells, tranny cross member and the bottom of the frame.
3. Make sure all doors seal, open, and close properly from both sides (yes i said both sides).
Check under the dash for water markes, as the fire wall and windshield are know for leaking.
4. Check the fluid levels.
5. Check the battery for corrosin
6. Make sure the horn, key, and steering wheel all work right.
7. Make sure you have all the proper keys, Door's half/full, the glove compartment, back tail gate, lock box's, Wheel lug lock keys, wench start key, ect.
8. Tops Learn how to take it off if its a soft top have them show and check for missing parts.
hard top check the back windsheild struts, check the fiberglass for cracks, the bolt holes for wear, and that there is a seal bettween the body and top.
Soft Top Check for day light, Rips, Stiches coming out, are the windows clear and free of scratches or foggy? can you un-zip and re-zip the windows and the zipper is not off track. Are the button clips okay, and are the side plastic door/front windshield mounts cracked?
9. Dose all the enternal electronics work. Radio, lights, cigarret lighter/12v aux power, fan, heater, vent cable opens easily?
10. Petal's fell okay clutch esp.
11. Check the roll cage and windshield to see if the vehical was ever rolled.
12. inspect the differantal's, oil pan, axels to see if they liked to rock crawl.
13. Inspect the window frame and the seal's for age, crack's, or rust.
14. Look at the tire tread and there side walls for off roading wear.
15. Check the exhuast system for rust, leaks, hole's, dent's, ect.
(I got my buddy a jeep real cheap because the lady selling it thought there was something wrong with the engine. really one of the U-bolts had came lose and it had an exhuast leak. so it was idleing ruff, sounded bad, and had trouble starting due to bad back pressure. He got it for a steal and all we had to fix was a u-bolt LOL)
16. Brake and hydrolic lines for dents
17. Walk around it again and wiggle everything. listen for noise's feel for movment, ect

Test drive it, Run threw every gear at every RPM range, test the low and high 4X4, brake hard from 60mph, turn on all the lights and brights, make turns in 4X4-normal juttering is expected on a 90 degreee turn.

Last but not least piss on it, to mark it as your's if you like it.

List of Items that should of been replaced on NHTSA recall:
Im lazy just read the list here. LIST

Things I learned To Replace on a Used Jeep:
1. Passenger Side engine mount. replace it with Dealership part as its much stronger and better metal then auto parts store. There known to break.
Reason. You'll drop your engine, your fan will fall, hit the axel and get bent, the oil filter explode when hitting the frame, It might rip out your front tranny cross member bolt on the passanger side or weaken it so it rust out faster, the Oil Pan will get dent, and you'll have to tow it home or macgyver it.

2. Radiator
Reason. Its a good idea as it may have cracks, clogs, holes, and you can get an oversided one which will add more cooling. Save your self from haveing to buy a new engine becasue you over heat it.

3. Cold Air Intake
Reason: it will run so much better, its not even funny how much you will notice it. The stock air box kills your flow, NOTE: keep the air box for if you state has emissions test.

4. All Fluid's, this is a no brainer. If i was going to buy a car i would ask to test drive it over night. and i would take it home and check all the fluids and crack the rear diff. to look at the the drive line input bearing and at the Ring and pinion gear to see how messed up they are.

5. U joints all of them.
Reason they can wear and cause vibriation, witch will kill your seals and your diff. bearings.

7. Alot or all of the wiring, hose, and vac. lines.
Reason you will save alot of time and money buy finding problems before they happen by checking your lines. Most batter cable lines will be corroided, you will find atlest one hose with a crack, hole, or rub in it, vacume lines its good to check with a pressure test so much of the jeep running correctly depends on your vacume lines. AND THERE SO CHEAP TO REPLACE ON YOUR OWN.

8. The stock carpet or any for that fact.
Reason Carpet keeps water longer, it will causes rust, and your jeep has leaks face it. Also it smells bad, oil, grease, food, water, ect so just pitch it. i only have the floor pans and mats in my jeep i threw away the drain plugs too, as i tend leave my jeep topless in the rain. I recommend rinio liner or bed liner for your jeep. put it everywhere.

9. Windshield
If its not rusted yet, RTV the F**K out of it. you'll thank me later.

10. Brakes
Just a good idea new brake lines are cheap and if your jeep has lift you might need longer one's. and the pads need new just so you know what you have. If you take it to a shop check the torque on the wheel nuts as they alway over tighten them with impact wrenches.

Things you might want to up grade.
On a 2.5 up grade to the 4.0 Throttle body.
Tires
Body lift
Lift
Fenders
hard top or soft
Radio
Lights
wench
exhuast
ect....

If i forgot something plz add it in a post.
