|Hardwater Kiter||Pix didn't take. Oh yeah and for $1500 I'm pretty sure I'm going straight to Hell. But I'll be going in a pretty sweet old Jeep!|

Okay one final update and I'll let this thread die. I just wanted to post some pics of the new rig after I cleaned her up and put the mirrors from the CJ on. I've fixed everything that I found wrong with it and all I have left is the exhaust leak just forward of the catalytic (pain in the A$$) and a e-brake is disconnected in the caliper ( i think) and the temp gauge. (any suggestions there?)
After looking at the pics I figure either Karma is getting me back for something good or this thing is just waiting to explode and kill me. I dunno. But I'm starting to dig the color and it's bee great scooting around in her.
Oh and for ENIX89yj I posted a pic of my J2000 which I'm going to dump.
Thanks again for the support and advice everyone and the revisit of Monty Python.

congrats!! mine is an 89 and i wouldn't take less than 3200 for mine.. and mine has the 4cyl... i wish i could find a deal like that on one around here!!
where do u live and how much for the j2000??? hahahahahahaha

|Project87YJ||Congrats man nice YJ. Wished I would have gotten that kind of deal on my 87. Shes got 217,000 miles on her no rust to speak of but she still cost me $4000 here in Florida. The worst part is I looked at several other in a lot worse condition that people where asking $7000 or more for.|

Got her registered and insured today. Took her out for a drive to the local DQ and about town. Definately an exhaust leak under the skid plate. Other wise she rides and drives really well.
Color me stoked. I'm even starting to like the "garden hose" green paint. I'm tapped out $ wise and scrambling to get it together before the next bill cycle but I think it's worth it.
It feels awesome to drive a jeep again. A friend of mine drives a TJ and kept telling me that "real" jeeps have round headlights. I pointed out that my jeep is almost 20 yrs older has less than half the rust and a I6 that I can work on and will actually pull me up a hill at a reasonable speed.
Oh and I paid $1500 and he paid $18000. He shut it after that.
Anway I'm wicked psyched and can't wait to drive her more tomorrow.

jeeps are cheaper to fix than most vehicles. If you know what you're doing under the hood anyway. If you do, i'd drive that trans till it craps, and get an ax-15. now that i've dropped and put mine back in 4 times, it doesn't seem like such a hard task to install a trans. just a damn greasy one. if it runs and drives clean, then sounds like you got a hell of a deal. 87 may have been the first YJ, but it's still a YJ (big it up for the squares).
congrats, and welcome to squaresville
|07-22-2010 07:18 AM|
I think so.
I'm going to register it today and hopefully I'll be able to drive it around this weekend. I'm going to tell the smarter half that I bought it. She'll probably make me sleep in the spare room for a while but she'll get over it after we take it for a ride.
If not that's okay, I sllep better when I have the whole bed to myself.
Thanks again everyone. I'm sure I'll be on the forum more in the future as I pick through this thing.
|07-20-2010 10:06 PM|
|ntwrkguru||Pretty sure you got a steal.|
|07-20-2010 08:46 PM|
Congrats on getting it finally.

DONE AND DONE FOR $1500!
Whew! Thank God that's over now all I have to do is get rid of my J2000 before the wife finds out I bought the YJ. I fixed the directionals and a few of the other little things. I'm gonna have to pull off the skid plate and see if I can fix the exhaust leak.
$1500 for a vehicle that I can start and drive and will pass inspection seems pretty like a pretty good deal.
Thanks everyone for your input it made the decision a lot easier.
I can't wait to get this thing on the road.

HEHEHE yeah I know, I have a sticker that say's that on the driverside visor on the CJ rotting in the back 40.
Still a hell of a lot cheaper to repair and maintain than the Rex I assure you. In a perfect world I'd like to have all three but like I said the Scooby will nickle and dime me if I don't drive it more. If I'm not driving it then that means I don't really need it. I have a 2 car garage but I work in the bike industry and I'm a snowkiter for Peter Lynn Kiteboarding so both sides are filled to the gills with bike and snowkite stuff.
I haven't had a car in the garage since 2001.
We should build a new garagemahal. Some big 3 or 4 bay beast.
No call back today, guess I'll wait until tomorrow. I just booked a flight for the smarter half to come back on the 21st. (damn I thought I'd have more time!) This is gonna be close.
I think the tranny is filled with brie. Room temp at that.

Good luck on the buy tho You've got a steal on your hands if you can get it.
|07-19-2010 08:27 PM|
|rusty-shackleford||I don't have to worry about "body rot" down here in Arkansas. Good luck on your decision!!! I'll try to send you a pic when I get my WRX. Later!!!|

I'm tryin', I'm tryin'. No call yet.
That's funny you're trying to buy a Rex. We're thinking about selling our's. The car is awesome but we never drive it and it's the kind of car that if you don't give it exercise it will go all to hell. Brakes will freeze up, exhaust will rot off etc... Especially here in New England.
We have an '02 that we bought in '01 and I just broke 70,000 on her. Great car, fun as hell to drive, NOTHING is better in the snow (especially with 4 studded Nokians, she'll climb a damn tree) but I drive the van more and ride a bike to work a couple times a week. Scooby gets you from point A to B fast but repairs are not easy sometimes and $$$$. If I have to work on a car every so often I decided I may as well get another Jeep. Cheaper to own and cheap and easy to repair.
And just as much fun in a different way.
If I don't score this YJ I'm gonna have to shoot myself.
|07-19-2010 07:38 PM|
|rusty-shackleford||Seriously, buy the YJ. i had a subaru justy fwd for 5 years, in between Jeeps, and i've been a subaru fan since. it got me through the "ice storm of the century" in 99'-00' here in arkansas. i would love to have a WRX and my advice to you is to add a new accessory to your WRX, a pretty good looking Wrangler!! good luck bro!!!|
|07-19-2010 07:29 PM|
|rusty-shackleford||if it helps you any, i'm trying to get a WRX to go with my YJ!!! i think they are the perfect combo. good grief man, BUY THE DANG JEEP!!!|
|07-19-2010 05:53 PM|
Holy phone tag and I still haven't spoken with the guy! He's back in town tho and is supposed to call me tonight.
Of course you know this thing comes up just as I had a ton of bills come due so the $ situation is wicked tight but as everyone agrees it's too good to pass up especially with all the frustration of waiting to hear back!
I want to buy it just so I'll get some sleep tonight. Of course if I buy it I'll be up all night messing around with it and fixin' the "quick" little stuff.
And my smarter half said I could only buy it if I got rid of the CJ and the J2000. I'm keepin' the CJ but I'll sell the J2000 but not before I buy the YJ. She's in Vegas/Pahrump for a few days and has no clue what's transpired.
What happens in New Hampshire stays in New Hampshire. I'm probably going to have to hide the thing for a while. That should be fun.

|toshpate||have an 89, paid way more then 1600 and it has more issues then that one, get on it tater|

|bergy||i have an 87 YJ too and i would jump on another one for that price... guy doesnt know what hes got even if it has a few minor problems anything that old will... good luck on getting it i hope it works out well and runs strong for you|
|07-18-2010 11:03 PM|
|scott howard||I love mine. go for it|
|07-18-2010 05:00 PM|
|the beep mechanic||
no rust is a very good thing
If the body/frame are that solid, go for it. Mechanical work is easier (well usually) than bodywork. If the seller accepts your offer, you have a good foundation to work with.

|tx_ffemt||When I found mine on c-list, took the owner 2 days to call me back. It was a very long 2 days indeed. Why would you post something for sale and then not be available for buyers? Anywho, I had the same feelings as you. I was hoping that it would have something terribly wrong with it so I would not buy it and keep looking for something less old and with less miles. Turned out I could not find any serious issues and ended up buying it. Still very happy with my decision. If there is not alot of rust, everything else seems easily repairable, something that old is not going to be perfect but from what u describe it seems like a very good buy.|
|07-17-2010 07:13 PM|
I know! I know! I'm convinced its a good deal and I'm trying to buy it but the owner is out of town for the weekend and isn't returning calls.
I know I said the thing has 200000 (204000 actually) but you would never knwo it looking at it. Seriously if you crawled around and looked at it and you'd swear it can't have more than 60 or 70000 on it. It's really wierd.
Then I thought "Dolly". It's an '87 it must have a mechanical odo and they must have been using this thing as a dingy for an RV. It would only be driven in the summer and driven lightly most likely.
And this is my guess as to why the Pugeot is still kickin'. A few of my friends have had them and the all seemed to crap out fairly early in the game. At least compared to other trannys. But even with the high miles on her the Pugeot isn't too much of a worry for me at this point. I'll run it until it acts up and take it from there.
Assuming it has been towed is there anything that high towing mileage can harm on it? My first guess is to replace the fluids in he diffs and check that stuff out. The driveshaft ujoints seem rock solid. The springs seem wicked soft but I may be used to the stiff suspension on my CJ and the WRX.
I'm going to go down and visit the jeep right now.
|07-17-2010 06:06 PM|
The tranny has 200k on it..........it still runs........it's a Peugeot tranny.........
I don't get the hate for this tranny. Yeah, it's weaker than the AX series, but come on, 200k is pretty damn good for a transmission in my mind.
I wouldn't let that deter you a bit in buying this. Plan on spending the cash to buyu it and don't dwell on the what-ifs, poo happens and we deal with it. B uy it and have fun with it, it sounds like a great deal to me, even if you make it a project Jeep.
Where in NE are ya?
