monkeee2002 Thanks for posting your fix!
That's good information. Glad it didn't cost you a bunch of cash

dweilmd Found the problem. It was that little plastic bushing that holds the shifter cable to the transmission.

Shifter malfunction

I have a 2005 wrangler rocky mountain edition with 40k miles -- automatic transmission. It has always run great. Today I started the car and tried to put it in drive and the shifter was loose... no resistence when I shifted into gear. It did not engage and is stuck in neutral. The shifter just slides up and down, but nothing happens. I removed the console to see if the shift cable was properly latched into bracket and everything looked fine.

I don't know if the cable broke (does that happen ?!?) or if came loose on the tranny side, or possibly somthing more sinister/expensive. Unfortunately I really don't know anything about trannys, or even where to look on the underside of the vehicle. Any help would be appreciated since this is my DD, and towing it in to get fixed will be $$$. I would at least like to get it into Drive so I can take it in to get fixed instaed of having it towed.

Thanks.
