My steering was loose feeling on my YJ and the problem ended up being the nut on the steering box had worked its self loose. That was caused by the lock washer cracking and no longer making tension on it. I believe it had to torque it to like 190 ft. lb. Fixed it right up.

|cogleymike||ok, i will try that. i have been told it was the u-joint or that x shaped object that can be replaced in the yj's but the tj need a new shaft. i think its call the lower intermediate shaft|

|BigSahara||Try looking at your front sway bar bushings. Also think about upgrading your steering box if you have bigger tires.|

There's a fairly easy straight-forward way to determine what is causing that kind of issue. Get a friend to turn the steering wheel back & forth while you watch the steering system from the front and look for things that are moving that should not be. Certain things like the tie rod and drag link ends will have a bit of rotational play but there should be absolutely zero side-to-side play anywhere.
This will show any loose bushings, wallowed out mounting bolt holes, etc. pretty quickly. The engine should be running so the guy at the steering wheel can turn the wheel long enough to let you see what's going on down there. Have him do short side-to-side turns much of the time which should allow you to spot the problem more quickly.

Wiggly Loose Steering
i think i may need a steering shaft. not sure if i need the upper or lower inter shaft.
i have a wiggly steering wheel that has play. kinda like i need it to be adjusted. its weird. and alignment didnt help either.
