2ndchildhood 2010 4dr How do you remove the deck on top of the stereo to replace the stereo. I hear you need A $100 plug to install aftermarket stereo. Any thoughts

I disagree with that old and totally outdated opinion on Sony. That's like complaining about the Jeep Wrangler TJ because the Jeep Wrangler YJ the TJ replaced had leaf springs and some had the old crappy Peugeot transmission.

While Sony earned a reputation for some crappy stuff not many years ago, the units they been shipping the last couple years have been as good as any similar price-range head unit. I've had two of them, consider myself astute in such things since I've been into audio for 45 years (and currently working in the extremely high-end Audio/Video design-build field). Personally, I consider it a fine head unit and comparable to the others in the same price range like Kenwood etc.

Thompsontommy, the Polk speakers you purchased were a good choice for that particular head unit. Generally speaking, Polk's speakers have a higher Sensitivity rating than most other speaker brands do which means they don't require as much power to drive them nicely. That makes them a good fit for a stock head unit that typically only has 15-18 RMS watts of power per channel which isn't a whole lot. High sensitivity speakers like that (your Polks probably have a 91 or 92 dB Sensitivity rating) can really help make an inexpensive head unit come alive that had been struggling to drive less efficient (Sensitive) speakers.

A speaker with a 91 dB Sensitivity rating will sound noticeably louder at the same volume setting than a speaker with, say, only an 88 dB Sensitivity rating.

Would this sound much better than the stock unit?As far as a stereo don't need a lot of fancy features just to sound better and be louder than my stock unit ,any suggestions?

THANK YOU!
I just put the same combo of front and rear speakers in. They sound great. Bought everything from Crutchfield. Free shipping and they tossed in all the wire harnesses I needed as well as the bracket for mounting the front speakers. I think the brackets and harnesses would have run me about $50 anywhere else. I also replaced the sub with a Kicker 10CVT654. It fit in the console very well. Only required modifications were new mounting holes for the sub. The wiring was straight forward. You just have to pay attention to the terminal sizes. There is a positive and negative set on each side of the factory sub. Just cut 'em and twist 'em together. The pair with the red was the positive and the pair with the black was the negative.

Jma20a hate to break it to ya but that sony headunit is just a paper weight. not much better than the stock unit, just has more options and inputs and outputs. the only reason it sounds better is because of the speakers.

and as for kenwood, they make far better units than sony

alpine, pioneer, kenwood , and clarion make good units

Bobthegod I would offer to stay away from Kenwood's. I had them and they were not any better then the stock radio. I then got a Sony CDX-GT640UI which has a iPod connector and a USB port so you plug in a thumb drive with music. Got it on eBay for about $110.Then got some Alpine Speakers for less then $150. The sound now is awesome, I can hear it, blast it, top down and still hear everything. Wasn't too exspensive so now real worried about theft. So there's my 2 cents.

Jma20a i always recommend that you find something on crutchfield that is over your spending limit and go to ebay and get it for a much better price.

thompsontommy what exact model of kenwood deck do you have.I had wanted to get some Polk home speakers along time ago they are supposed to be really good. These ones have a good sensitivity rating so they should make my stock deck sound louder.

Just Bought the Polk's

Thanks for the info. Just was on Amazon and bought the polk speakers for a lot less than Crutchfield. So I'll do the same thing may be I don't neet the head unit

doclouie I did the same exact thing just a couple months ago, but I went Kenwood speakers with a lower end Kenwood head unit. I changed out the speakers before changing out the stock head unit and it was a world of difference. I must be honest though I did not notice any difference between the stock head unit and the new Kenwood head unit.
