Oh yeah, get from crutchfield. They supplied everything except said nut. They also threw in connectors so I dine have to go down the solder and iron route.
|12-31-2010 04:12 PM|
I just installed a Sony 650 from Crutchfield. $159, includes shipping, a new bezel, a bracket, and 2 harnesses. Called their customer care and got the infoto make sure about soldering the wires to the harness, they couldn't have been more helpful. Soldered the wires, pulled the old radio, installed the new in no time. Works fantastically !! (Did have to buy an antenna extender, $6) My iPod plugs right into the usb connection on the front, faceplate is removable. My stock radio picked up about 4 am stations, the new one picks up AM630 in Washington, DC which is 85 miles from me! Got the radio in one day. Love it.
Just sayin UR

Hey Grumpy. did you ever get the center sub to work? The wifey got me the Sony DSX-S100 for Christmas, got it installed same day. Sounds amazing and I got the center sub to work with the help of that thread i referred you to. This Sony really brought the factory speakers to life. Will upgrade them in the future for some xplods , but for now, totally content with the sound. Installation was a breeze as well.
Anyway, just wanted to see if you ever got that issue worked out.

|rubicon hobby||I kept the stock radio and installed the I-simple, it is an FM modulator that the radio antenna goes through. Best Buy sells it but I found it cheaper on Ebay charges my phone plays all my music and was super fast to install in my 03.|

Have you tried this post? Some one had the exact same issue that I am concerned about, and possibly yourself, on this thread ,http://www.wranglerforum.com/f40/ins...-up-31293.html , Post#27 and on talks about the center sub issue.
If everything isn't going to work after I upgrade a stereo,i.e center sub, then I might as well be back at square one of having to deal with factory stereo. I'm anal like that.

+1 for Sony's!!
Have used Sony stuff all my life and have NEVER had a problem. Just had a Sony Xplod installed in my car with aux and usb connections built in.

Not sure if this is what your looking for but here's what I did.

That Alpine looks really slick as well. I would have to do some comparing against the two. For the sub issues that you have had, was all the troubleshooting and fixing on your own, or did you take it some where? I am by no means not afraid to get my hands dirty, but i also know when to call in the pros on some items, maybe in this case, CarToys.
And as for Mikal, I'm an avid Droid user as well, but when on the road, it just doesn't do well as my primary audio source. Plus, nothing out there really beats the iPod, whether you like it or not, every thing is for the damned iPod/phone/pad now days. Just cant get away from the grip of Jobs. But thats also why i like the aux input on the front as well, cause if, say i want to integrate the audio of the voice calls, or fire up last.fm or Pandora, its there and available.
Either way, I really had no idea that these stereos were out there cause my last ride was a real dive and it just had everything rigged to work. Why put a stereo in thats worth more than the vehicle you drive. But now that I got my Jeep, im ready to upgrade.
I appreciate all the feed back and ideas on this. Y'all have been great.

I use an Alpine IDA-x100 which I really like. Alpine actually spent a few million dollars to have Apple design the interface with the iPod. So you can control the iPod from the deck but it works just like you are using your iPod. I know they have newer models now but I really have been impressed with Alpine's and I like not having to mess with the actual iPod.
I have had an issue running my sub-woofer since hooking this up and have tried to fix it but still haven't had any luck. Not sure what the answer is but I have tried all of the standard ideas, example the remote wire.

|Joshpeb2||I know what it is and have seen it in person and it worked great. Didnt sound any different than mine which has an mp3 input jack on the front for direct connect.|

You make some good points about the Sony unit, especially if you are an iPod user. I have an android phone and I like to integrate all my devices into one as often as I can, for example I use this for my MP3 player also. That's why I was so hellbent on a 1/8" audio connector since it primarily uses that. I wonder if there are any cheap bluetooth radios out there that I could hook it up to instead? I also like the USB idea, I could just use a separate drive. Theft really worries me though, even without the faceplate I've seen steroes stolen Makes no sense
Edit:Joshpeb, that kit is a fixed FM modulator, basically the same thing we are using now. Most of these have horrible audio quality
I found this http://www.amazon.com/Dual-XHD6425-B.../dp/B000VPC44O
It's under $100 but I have no idea of the brand or quality haha

|Hammerwalk||yeah, i've seen that one before, and was tempted to get it, but then i stumbled upon this Sony with no CD player and found that more interesting. I hardly ever use CDs any more, plus the ability for the tracks to skip while on the trail kind of kills it for me when you are in that "lets tear it up" mode and the tunes go out :-(|
|12-01-2010 03:35 PM|
|billyb||I have a Kenwood MP-342? with the USB input on the front. Got a deal last December from Amazon with 2 6.5" speakers (also Kenwood, don't remember the model, they are 3 ways) for $150. The 6.5" speakers went directly into the soundbar for a HUGE improvement and then once my mounting bracket for the head unit came in (weeks later, gotta pay more attention to that "ships in 2-4 weeks" thing on Amazon) and I got it installed I'm great. I mostly run my iPod whenever I'm driving, I keep it locked in the console. If I'm worried about theft, I just remove the faceplate and lock it in the console, too. Over 4000 songs at a touch at all times.|

With one of those units, mounted up under the dash or where ever, you still have to grab the iPod and fiddle with it. More of a distraction i think. Where as with this Sony unit, its all in a remote, your iPod isnt going to go sliding around or fall to the floor, that is unless you use velcrow, but then you have that on the iPod or phone where ever you go. Its the ease of grabbing a USB stick, or your iPod, loading it up with songs, tossing it into the slot, or the hidden bay, letting the stereo do a search for you, and have everything at the touch of a remote.
It could be 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, but in all reality, I do it cause i can. I have had many vehicles where i have done the home brew technique, rig all the stuff up so that it would work, ever since back in the day with the cassette adapters (which honestly, those worked a hell of a lot better than the FM transmitters). Im just done with rigging shit to make things work. Im at the point where if i can get it in an all-in-one package, i will. But only if it will work with everything i have, which is why i brought up the question of working with the center sub.
The items in the link you sent me would work, but why bother any more is how i see it, especially for those prices. Not much of an electrical connoisseur to be able to rig one of those up on my own, which now runs into my issue with rigging things.
I'll get there, some how, some way.

I'm in your boat too, I have a monsterplay FM transmitter (considered one of the best) but I am so sick of dealing with the AC socket and the bulky channel selector. Why won't a inside dash mounted unit appeal to you? I'm just curious, either way you'll need a single wire to touch your ipod. Here are some examples:
Auxiliary Inputs for Jeep Stereos | TSS-Radio
Wicked expensive, I really want to know what is going on inside those units, it's probably a simple op-amp buffer circuit or something that costs $5 to home brew and they jack up the price. I'd love to make a DIY unit..
|12-01-2010 02:08 PM|
As far as the items that can interface with the rear side of the factory stereo, just isn't ideal to me. Right now the FM transmitter works, but its just me being picky i guess. Plus I have Sirius, and again, with all the wires involved with that, i would just prefer for everything to be all nice and neat. As far as theft, thats what insurance is for.

|MikalCarbine||Why bother spending money on ANY radio if the risk of having a break in increases due to the non stock look? There are units that interface into the rear of the stock radio into the external cd changer port that interfaces to a 1/8" audio connector. I'm sure this can easily be concealed under the dash too. I've looked into this in the past but never bit since the units are around 50 bucks|
