Yep it's possible, you'll just need a new PCM, Transmission Computer, PCM to Transmission Computer cable, and the mechanical parts.... transmission mount, shifter & cable, flex-plate to replace the flywheel, etc.
It's a major undertaking but I did it to my '97 & it worked out well. But with a newer TJ like yours which is a bit more complex than my '97 was, I'd seriously consider selling it & buying one with an automatic already installed.

I just bought a 2000 Wrangler TJ that was converted from manual to automatic. It runs good but I have one little concern: Often I see the little arrow light, (the one that tells you it is time to shift on manual transmissions) on the dashboard come on, and the jeep starts jumping a little like looking for that next gear. Is this normal or could it be that whoever made the change forgot to change the computer or installed the wrong one.

|Jerry Bransford||The only way you're gonna get rid of those codes is to replace the present PCM (aka ECM on older vehicles) programmed for an automatic for another PCM programmed for a manual transmission. As it is now, the PCM is looking for sensor input signals and codes from the auto tranny's computer and it's not gonna get them from the new 6-speed manual transmission. You can find replacement (rebuilt) PCMs on eBay.|

04 wrangler auto to 05 manual 6 speed
I'm helping a buddy who converted an automatic 04 wrangler to a 6 speed from a 05. he has several codes p0706 shifter signal, p0750 lr solenoid circuit, p0846 2-4 pressure switch ,p0871od pressure switch, p1899 park/nuetral switch. any idea on how to get rid of them? maybe replace the ecm, or fake the sensors?

(Sorry bmanrkg2 but the automatic in your 2004 is a 42RLE transmission which is computer controlled and would be a nightmare to install into his 2001. Consider a swap between a 2002 and older and 2003 and newer to be pretty much a non-happener.)
Is this true? Mine is a 2003 and i would like to swap it over, is there any other way to get it done?

Sorry to hear of your wife's MS, I also have MS, was diagnosed 6 yrs ago and the best thing that happened to me was my daughter started to drive and would not drive a stick so I bought a '02 with auto and I now love it, had a '97 stick. The only regret I have is that it is not a 4 spd auto. revs a little high and a little doggy.

I'm looking forward to swapping over, I know my wifey will be a lot happier with the automatic! When the wifey is happy, everybody is happy haha.

CDodge04, you need to stick with a '97 to 2002 automatic transmission known as a 32RH) to make the swap a reasonable thing to get working. And yes the swap for any TJ from 1997 to 2002 is about the same in terms of parts needed. You only need an engine computer for your model year and engine type that is set up for an automatic to make it work. Even all the wiring needed to make it work is already there and ready to be plugged into.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm considering doing the same thing with my 5 speed Wrangler, the only difference is that mine is a 2001. I don't do any off roading and am just using this for a summer cruiser/vehicle to pull my single jetski or single atv with, so no heavy duty pulling. Is the swap for the 2001 4.0L the same as for the 2000? I know that I have the nv3550 tranny now and will be swapping to the 32rh. It definitely seems from the reading that I have done so far that the conversion is around $1000 for all the parts and such...
I've had my eye out for an automatic 4.0 but I haven't seen anything that compares to mine. My Wrangler is a 2001 with only 61,000 miles on it, all the automatic's around have 120,xxx + and are listed in the 6k + range.

First John, a big welcome to WF! Second, and more importantly, I'm sorry to read of your wife's MS diagnosis. I have a friend who was diagnosed about the same time and I realize it's a tough thing to have to live with for both of you.
So far as your conversion goes, I did converted my '97 from the same 5-speed you have to the 32RH 3-speed automatic transmission. That's the same transmission Jeep used as its OE automatic transmission through 2002 and it's a very rugged and dependable transmission so long as you don't flood it with water by crossing water that is too deep. It's pretty much a bolt-in job once you get all the parts, though you do also need to swap the TJ's engine computer for one out of the same model year TJ and same engine but one that had the automatic. This is because the automatic needs the torque-converter lockup signal that is only provided by a computer (ECM) programmed for an automatic.
I did my conversion in a weekend and it wasn't technically difficult. You'd need the automatic style engine computer (ECM), 32RH transmission, new transmission mount, shifter, shifter cable, flexplate, and the hard coolant lines that connect the transmission to the radiator which already contains ports for the transmission. Also make sure the 32RH includes the torque converter and the little unique bolts that secure the flex plate (similar to a flywheel) to the torque converter.
I paid $800 for my used 32RH which included everything including a radiator I did not need, though it did not include the ECM.
I'd hit up some junkyards and have them pull all those parts and make sure they give you all the hardware they removed to if they pull it out of a TJ for you.
Incidentally, going to the automatic really transformed my TJ so far as its offroading goes, it helps a lot on the tough stuff. One more thought... since you won't have overdrive with the 32RH like you do with your present 5-speed, your engine rpms will be higher which can be fixed with either larger tires or gearing your axles to a slightly higher ratio.

Manual to Automatic Transmission Conversion
Hey Folks, this is my first post here. I'm not a mechanic or anything resembling one so forgive any ignorance.
I have a 2000 4.0L Wrangler, 5 speed manual transmission. My wife was diagnosed with MS close to 3 years ago and we've gotten to the point with her handicap where I'm either going to have to trade it in on something automatic, or get it converted to automatic so she can drive it.
From you pros out there, should I even be considering a transmission conversion here? Can it be done without a huge cost associated? Its got 92k miles on it and it runs great, have had to do very little maintenance on it over the years and I love not having a car payment.
