|Mean.Green||I would use something safe to check your pulleys. The idler pulley makes a whine if the bearings aren't up to par. But if it is the idler pulley it will be fine. It would just have an annoying whine lol.|

|Jbird450||Ok so I have had my manual for about a month it has been 15 years since I drove stick and I have a dumb question. Is your transmission suppose to wine when your in the different gears?|

When you twist your knee/ankle trying to right your rig or dig it out, you'll wish you had an auto.
When you're crawling and it pops out of gear or you miss the gear or your muddy boot slips off the clutch pedal, you'll wish you had an auto as you go slamming down the hill.
When you fry your clutch after the umpteenth water hole / mud bog and can't get it into gear to get up that last hill, you'll wish you had an auto.
When you've got to go to the bathroom really badly but you're on a tight trail with no place to pull over and go, you'll wish you had an auto.
If you saw the Steve Martin movie Parenthood and don't want to crash your Jeep, you'll wish you had an auto.

I wouldn't think rock crawling would be that tough with a manual (just gotta know how to drive it) -- all the pro's rigs are manual! Especially since the wranglers come with hill assist these days. I'm not much of a fan of the hill assist on the road, but it has been handy a time or two on the trail. Basically the jeep does the old "hand break until you clutch and gas trick" for you. Like I said annoying on the road, but when you have a small space to turn around on the trail and steep drop next to you it sure does help. I wish they had an on/off switch for it next to the traction control.
Viva Las Manual!!!

manual hands down
lovin the 6 speed rubi, way better than the 5 speed in my old 99 TJ....5th gear was useless on the highway and 4th wasnt much better, the only benefit i can see with the automatic is the ability to shift when bogged, but if ya grab the right cog to begin with its no big ol deal

|HansB||Just got results on the dyno. My 6-spd made 156 REAR wheel hp and 180 rear wheel torque. That's cold, so it goes downhill from there!|

|DelRocini||Has anyone seen times posted for manual vs auto? Manual feels (butt dyno) more peppy. Is it true or my butt talking. (this isn't a reference to cutting cheese which would start a cheese thread|

I guess I'll use this tread since its already up! Not that it was a major concern but its something this thread really made me wonder!
Is it really that hard to do rock crawling with a manual?
i'm looking to get a jk and I'm getting it manual either way since I've been driving stick for the past 15 years... I'm going to be completely new to jeeps though.

|chucky cheese||My opinion, not that it has a major impact . Is if you drive a stick you are more aware of your surroundings meaning you have to pay attention to passing, hills ect. This makes you more alert. Rather than driving an auto, only worry is the gas peddle, listening to the singing nun doing Domonic on your entertainment system maybe singing along, admiring yourself in the rearview maybe seeing a hint of a mustache [good if you are a guy, bad if you are a girl, unless your Italian.] Maybe put it on cruise control and take a snooze or text whatever. This argument can go on. Just thought I would put in my 2 pesos. Pesos yeah thats a different thread.|

a) the heat index is over 100 degrees and 100% humidity and no breeze, when even driving without a top still feels like blowing a hair dryer directly into your face, and you start to get a sunburn in literally 10 minutes.
b) Those two or three weeks of winter when it does actually get down into the low 30's, high 20's
c) During the torrential downpours that put several inches of water on the ground in a matter of minutes. During the rainy season, that could be several times a week, with lighter showers in between.
I may not have my Jeep yet, but I do have a motorcycle, and for a while it was my only transportation. I wanted a top for some of that time.
Not times like now, mind you. But those times listed above? You bet.

|jk'n||Manual or auto is a personal choice. The only posssssssible advantage that I can think of is the ability of the standard to allow more control. The down side of that same argument is that more control means that one has to study the technical aspects of applying a particular gear or engine RPM to a certain type of situation. For some owners, that is not enough reason go give up the ability to have that intimate relationship with the double whopper on an almost vertical rock climb. These choices are truly tough.....for some of us. Of course, I think many owners just aren't really into the technical stuff and are just satisfied with the automatic. It is after all easier to drive.|

|Wallygator||I actually prefer the control I have with the manual when I'm on the trails, But I gotta admit that around here with the hills and stop and go traffic sometimes, an auto would be nice. I would say look at what kind of use you are gonna give your jeep and go with whatever is gonna work best for you. Not everyone drives the same so why should everyone be equiped the same. That bein said, if the wife is gonna drive it.......Better let her have her say|

Manual. More fun. More control. More pep. Catch second when ever you feel youthful and big feet doesn't mean you need auto. I have size 15.
If you you have a soft sahara go with the auto tranny
