JDsDream Congrats on the find. Happy to hear that you went with the 6. You won't be sorry for that and it really doesn't effect the mpg's that much at all.

Congrats and welcome to the club!! You need to make sure you wave to all oncoming wrangler drivers as well or you are violating club rules!!

You should be glad that you bought a 6 cyl with a manual. The 4 banger just does not have any power especially when you add bigger tires or pulling. Plus, with proper care, the I6 will last a lifetime! Getting an automatic Wrangler is like buying an automatic Vette in my opinion. Just not a good idea!! Looking forward to some pics!!

itlyngld Ok so the deed is done. Got me a new-to-me YJ!! Its a 93, 4.0L, 5sp, with a new-ish motor (10K on it) and new trans (1 mile on it). Needs some TLC (paint job, maybe new top, wheels, tires, etc) but not in too bad shape. We like to say "It's A Work In Progress". Gee bet you never heard that before.... Drove it last night to the shop to get it checked out (it sat for over a year) so I want them to check everything to make sure it is road worthy. GatorDeve86 got a solution for your auto vs stick... get yourself a stick and get your wife an auto... I have a 5speed and as soon as I complete my LS1 swap im getting my wife an auto so she has a toy too.


P.S. ALWAYS CHECK THE FRAME... I've heard a ton of horror stories lol

itlyngld Thanks for all the feedback. Ya'll are great. That is just the type of info I am looking for. Sounds like an I-6 is gonna be the ticket. I know me and the 0-60 over 5 days (hehehe) is gonna rack my nerves so best to get the power up front.

I am really not against auto or 5sp. I think either would work for me. Auto would be nice for traffic but since it is a second vehicle, should be no biggie. I really wouldn't try to get an answer to which is better to own because just as been said, it is totally opinion based. Only thing I was wondering is if there are alot more issues (mechanically) with Auto than the Stick tranny's. I see there are alot more manual owners than autos so maybe that says something. In the end, the hunt is on and I really appreciate the input. I got someone looking at my truck this weekend so cross your fingers for me. Then we get to step up the hunt for the jeep.

So anyone in Va Beach VA or nearby area got one they wanna let go of cheap??? I promise it will get plenty of TLC. LOL!! Just kidding around....

birdhunter From you post if can live with a 4 banger
you can for sure get a TJ 5sp lifted with tires
for less than 5000 4cyl 5sp will have stock 410 gears also
but I think you need a 6 auto so a 93-95 YJ
is in order for your money

Got_Mud? I bought a 95 with the 6 and the manual in late March - put 20k miles on it so far and it hasn't hiccuped at all. I drive A LOT. I've towed with it, have a small trailer and a hitch-caddy thing, and it's a joy. I have 31x10.5's on it with a 1" shackle lift (came with) and get 19-22 MPG always. There are times I'd love an auto, but not often. And I love the fuel injection. Oh, and I'm banging the door on 200k miles. I did install a cold air intake - 'cause the PO WASN'T RUNNING AN AIR CLEANER AT ALL. {{sigh}}.

kj 92yj yj is, imho, a the cheaper platform to work with. it is also less confusing as the electronics get more and more sophisticated with the tj's and newer.

agreed with geoff with the pulling....i had an 86 cj7 4 cyl - 4 speed with 31's and it was a struggle to see 65. i couldn't imagine pulling anything with it. yes, gearing would probably have helped, but still........ anyway, now have i-6 5 speed and 80 is easy (also lifted 3" with 31's) so.........my suggestion is to get one with the 4.0 i-6 and not look back......

oh, and i picked up my yj with 145,000 on it for 3k. no frame rust. a little body rust that i'm working thru. needed (and still needs) a new timing chain, but othe than that, mechanically perfect....

Geoff@Bestop Pulling a trailer with a 4 banger might stress your patience a bit. Plenty of low speed torque, but it'll drop your 0-60 times down low enough that you'll use a calender to measure them.

The earlier models of YJ had a few pieces that were not as robust, and like flatline says, the FI engines will be nicer.

Auto vs Stick is a CONTINUOUSLY argued topic on all car forums, and it all boils down to preference. If you start looking at an early model YJ with an auto, ask specific questions about it here first. They used a few different trannies.

Overall the YJ is a nice rig, and is especially well suited to someone who wants to build it up.

MbRich I've owned a '94 YJ for about 6 years now. I love it. It is pretty stock, with a 4-banger and manual trans.

There are many times that I wished I had the Inline 6 instead of the 4cylinder. Sometimes it just doesn't have the power I was wanting, although I have been off road many times and didn't really have any problems.

On my '94 - Water seems to leak in from everywhere, old weather stripping lets it in around the doors, somewhere under my console it leaks in as well, but only when I wash it (maybe once a year). My windshield stripping started leaking and then eventually started coming out - a stop by my local glass shop reset the glass and replaced the stripping but set me back $150.

As of the start of this month, I upgraded to an '05 TJ/LJ (only 17k miles). My Dad's getting the YJ (with 160k miles) when I head down to TN for Thanksgiving. Keep your eyes open, I picked my YJ up for 4k when I was broke in College and that was 6 years ago.

itlyngld Thanks for the reply flatline. I would like to get TJ to be honest but I suspect after what I have seen on Craigslist and AutoTrader, not too much chance of finding one for 5k. Never kno I guess. I can always hope right?

flatline this is just my opinion. If you get a YJ stay with a 91-95 4.0. fuel injection much better than a carb, less problems, more power. 4.10 are ok with 33's, I like 4.56 better for towing. but as a YJ owner I would recomend a TJ. newer, better aftermarket support. I wouldn't get rid of my YJ, but stuff this old requires a lot of maintanence, and things just wear out. I don't like auto trans so I can't say much about them.

Hey ya'll.

Looks like this is the place to asksome ?'s so here goes. Looking to get my first Jeep. Thinking of spending around 5K so I know it will be older and stock and prolly gonna be a YJ. That's ok though cause I want to personalize it anyways (tires, lift, gears, etc). So the questions (as i know NOTHING about Jeeps):

1) I read 4cyl seems to be fine for your weekend toy, 6 is prolly better for a crawler or big tires. My plans are 32/33's and casual cruising and prolly some beach time. Need to pull a small 8' trailer at times for things like going to HD or Lowes cause I am selling my truck. Not majorly concerned with gas miles cause this is a 2nd vehicle but 15-17 would be nice. So your thoughts on the 4 vs 6? Think 4 is fine for me?

2) Auto vs Stick. Prefer an auto because my everyday driver is a stick and would be nice to just drop in gear and go. My wife also wants to drive and she HATES 5 speed but...... But do the older auto tranny's have issues I should be aware of? Is it better to suck it up and just go 5 speed? I have seen a few posts on here about converting 5 to auto but nothing talking about costs involved. I know with the Ford AOD and AODE tranny's they weren't that great. Kind of a luck of the draw thing. So I am wondering if YJ auto tranny's have issues like that.

3) Any other "watch out for's" other than the basic test drive, check the 4wd, etc? I have had 4wd trucks for 10 years now but never a Jeep so I am guessing there are specfic things to note.

My thoughts are currently, find a 89-96 4cyl, Auto, however many miles, and put 33's on 15x10 (or 12) and then save up some money and gear it with 4.10's. I just want to make sure I can pull that small trailer and also be able to get it in 5th gear on the highway and have a little pep to it.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!!
