Like I said, though, I'm not interested in fording any rivers or lakes. I just know some of the palces I go and will want to go are going to be wet. I'd rather know that I've waterproofed everything possible so I'm not as concerned with my ride taking a crap on me and can focus on driving and having fun.

If this isn't something that anyone has experience with, I completely understand and will stop bugging everyone. I was just hoping some of you out there have had the courage/foolishness to attempt deep water and were willing to share the path you took with your mods/precautions. That way I could learn and adapt/change your ideas and thoughts and make them mine or create new ideas where others have failed/been *less* successful.

Looks like I'm gonna be the pioneer.

Like I said, I'm not trying to bring water within a few inches of the headliner. I don't plan on taking the top off, using cruise, and standing on the seat to see.

Gee oh Dee To each his/her own, good sir. I agree, without a snorkel and sealed airbox taking any vehicle in water over the intake will hydrolock the motor. But if you have goals like being able to crawl over or drive through anything possible, water is something that needs to be adressed, so problems don't occur.

As for seats, whats wrong with having upgrades? Solid plastic core with removable covers? Racing seats.

There are ways to accomplish anything. This is why I research.

Jerry Bransford It makes no difference on '97 vs. '98, it uses the same transmission. Closing the vent hole in the transmission's front is best done by welding it with someone knowing how to weld aluminum properly.

Personally, I have no desire to submerge my Jeep to the level of the hood. None of the other vent lines (both axles and transfer case) go that high and it would just cause problems, not to mention it soaking into the foam seats and possibly wrecking the seats. I might consider that for an old beat-up trail only Jeep but not something I have to also drive on the street.

Not to mention that driving in water that deep without a snorkel will cause the engine to suffer hydrolock.

In my personal opinion, you're asking for problems with this line of thinking. My Jeeps have seen plenty of hair-raising rock crawling so it's not like I'm against "adventure".

Its diesel, though, that may make a difference. Either way he took my idea a little further than I'd planned on going. I'm not looking to put water up to the top weather stripping on the windshield.

Gee oh Dee Yep, thats a given as the water will creep right in and cause issues.

But thats not really a vehicle prep idea, its more of a "prepared driver" idea.

Sooooooo, nothing? No one takes their Wrangler through water up to the hood? I saw a video, that didn't inspire any of you?

I find this hard to believe. I know some of you out there are more adventurous than this!!

ygohome don't turn off the motor when the exhaust is under water. I forgot about this important rule and I'm just now getting back to driving it again after several months down time.

Gee oh Dee Its a 98 not a 97...if that makes a difference.

Any other concerns other than the trans breather?

I'm not against pulling the trans, I've done it before, and I've got a lift and the necessary trans jack and tools. Do I need to weld the front vent closed?

Jerry Bransford There is no breather hose on any of the transmissions in the '97 TJ, and the 32RH auto tranny you have doesn't make adding one easy since its vent is on its face, between where it bolts to the engine. To add a remote breather hose, you need to remove the transmission, seal its front-facing vent hole, and then drill/tap the top of the case and screw in a threaded barb hose fitting that you can attach a hose to.

Gee oh Dee Its the auto, and I've been told I need to lengthen the trans breather tube. If you are looking for a model number for the trans I have no effin clue. I'd like to know, though. Its the auto that was in the 1998 TJ's with a D35, nonlocking rear...if that helps...


Also, this is an ongoing project. Eventually its gonna be the "monster" everyone wants their Wrangler to be. I've got a D44 rear with an ARB in my 87 Cherokee that will eventually make its way into the TJ with at least 35's.

Now before everyone starts in with "why the hell do you need/want to do this..?" hear me out.

3 seperate times this summer (all less than 2 months apart) my girlfriend and I have been traveling on normal Milwaukee, WI city streets. These 3 specific times we've been caught in monsoon like downpours, and have seen water well over the wheels.

I'm not saying this is a normal occurance, but its happened. And the trails that are near our house have some really thick holes. I just want a little peace of mind when attempting water crossings. I know there is a limit, and if reached and crossed could yeild horrid results. I'm not interested in crossing the limits, but I want to know where my limit is, and that I've done everything in my power to prevent issues with non-limit reaching water. This Jeep is also not a daily driver, nor a trailer queen.

Deep water TJ

I understand the hazards involved with deep water crossing, but I, too, would like to hear some thoughts/ideas on what needs to be upgraded or removed or shut off when attempting deep water runs.

I've heard the usual, *common* suggestions, snorkel, di-electric grease, and silicon sealed distributor (if you still have one like I do).

I've done my own research, looked into "marine alternators" and a few snorkel kits.

Some personal experience would be great. What have you done? Whats the deepest you've taken your Jeep?

I saw a video on here (from the "don't Chadwick it" thread) of a Wrangler taking on a water hole that was above the hood. I'm not looking to ford rivers all the time, but I also don't want to hold back because I'm not prepared. I'd like to be able to push through water over the wheels, maybe not over the hood at first, but at least over the wheels.
