topher38 see here in colorado i dont have many tailgaters, yes there are the ones i get but it seems like everyone here drives 10 under the speed limit. and honestly it drives me nuts. like yes in the mountains where there is stuff to look at go for it. but when your going 40 down a road thats 55 it drives me nuts
03-24-2011 03:29 PM
jkaufman_95 This will work. Kinda.

99Wrangler4x4 Oh yeah, just get a bumper sticker that says "If you can read this, GET OFF MY @$$!" Remember, you gotta Jeep. not some rinky dinky honda or toyota.
03-24-2011 01:24 PM
99Wrangler4x4 I do 65 on the highway and obay all most speed limits and ignore tail-gators. BUT if they get on my nerves, I'll wait till I get a red light and back up and hit em when they stop right up on me.

LongShot Over sized mud terrain tires are your friend. I drive slow, but people don't stay behind me for long, especially up close. My Geolander MT+ throws back just about anything I drive over. Mud, water, rocks and small animals, hahaha!

Tailgaters aren't the smartest people, but they learn.

Good Luck!

abw0004 I am not going to lie, I can be one of those tailgaters. Being taught how to drive in Atlanta, it's what people do. I only do it though when someone is driving incredibly slow in the passing lane, and I cannot get by. I also do it when someone abruptly pulls in front of me, causing drastic action. I never honk though, but I may flip on my brights and my windshield lights if they cut me off almost causing a wreck. I am a safe driver though, and when I am going slower on the highway I let other people by that are going at a higher rate of speed.

M_ Someone may have already posted this but ive been thinking pretty seriously about mounting some rear facing trail lights

ArmyCop I'm still a newby with my Jeep. Haven't noticed any tailgater problems. I drive speed limit or a little slower. I have noticed people going around me but hasn't seemed to be a problem. I have a small LEO/Cop sticker over left rear brake light but don't think that'd make any difference.

dasaffen I had some guy in an acura tl get pissed off enough to pass me the other day. The only problem was, it was a two lane road with double yellow lines, in a residential area where the speed limit was 25, and i was already doing 35. Some people just have no patience or common sense. He also blew through the stop sign at the end of the road.

Adam H I don't let tailgaters get to me too much. All I may do is just slow down to 5-10 under the speed limit.
03-23-2011 10:43 PM
jkaufman_95 I will say in my tj if people go flying by me I go okay w.e. But that was in the 4 cyl now the 6 cyl tj I don't really get passed and I was in town when a guy in a firebird pulled up next to me at a stop light revving his engine he thought he was being cute until I revved up the hemi and I beat him off the line. ( of course he missed a gear but still) felt pretty good.

sparky28 Im not saying it's ok to be up in your backseat with high beams on, what I'm saying is don't play games. Driving is dangerous as it is. If someone wants to get by, it's nothing personal against you, both you and the other driver need to safely coordinate an opportunity for the car to pass. If you are on a two lane highway and driving in the left lane, and someone comes up behind you....MOVE OUT OF THE WAY. That is how the autobohn (spelling?) in Germany works. If you are going too slow in the left lane, YOU GET THE TICKET. I guess American drivers are not smart enough to grasp this concept.

Flinging water, oil, your horse's crap is a criminal offense and you'd be held liable if something was to happen as a result. Brake checking is even worse. When it's a single lane or you're in the right lane going the speed limit, then by all means, tailgaters suck. But if you're the one effing up, and I see it all the time, well a big eff you.
Perfectly Put

TJChris27 When the tops off my rear windshield wiper pisser squirts straight backwards. I don't know if it helps any but it provides me with enjoyment cause i know i hate when i get some wiper fluid spray back at me from other vehicles.

I don't agree with some of the extreme ways of dealing with it but as you saying its alright for someone to be in your back seat with their high beams on when you're going 52 in a windy 45?

billytheyj Ahaha I like to slow down till they eventually go around and leave.. I had some punk in an 1980 something honda with that loud annoying coffe can type exhaust and no matter what I did he just tailgated and yelled naughty words so I braked checked him he finally got in the other lane yelled more at me and cut me off but never brake checked me back... I think my 2 1/2' stinger was a deterent. To bad I would have liked to put that honda out of its misery.

I like this one . I will have to try it out the next time an idiot decides they want to listen to my radio, while driving their car!

bpm54 Back in my service days, a life time ago, a service buddy of mine drove a beater and kept a brick on the floor board. When people would tailgate him and just refuse to back off he would hold the brick outside the window as a warning to back off, or eat brick. As far as I know he never launched it.

I asked my insurance agent one time if a trucker could be liable for windshield damage when they get off the pavement and throw up gravel, he said if it comes off the road its a road hazard but if it comes off the vehicle its a liability.

AtcoTrailsINC i just switch on the rear fog lights and they get the hint

When i drove my mustang i aimed the rear wiper sprayer up so it would spray them with water or whatever i decided to put in the rear tank so funny.

Im now thinking about just mounting a paintball gun in the rear bumper that'll teach these f'ing Jersey drivers

sparky28 Big EZ is right. Yeah tailgaters suck, but we all know that at one time or another we have all done it. But what really pisses me off are people who just cruise in the left lane. The left lane is not the place for everyone to play or pretend they are the police. If you are going slower and notice a car coming up behind you, move over. But like I siad you shouldn't be cruising in the left lane anyways.

Some of us on this forum are BMW drivers.

That's like saying all Jeep drivers are rednecks or idiots. Doesn't fit us, so be careful about the stereotype.

When I'm in my Jeep, I'm NOT in a hurry. With 2.5L of 4 cylinder fury, I can't be. I go the speed limit or a couple over and leave it at that. If they want to pass, fine. Go ahead. If I'm on the highway, I'm in the right lane 98% of the time. If I'm in my other rides, I'm usually going a bit faster.

I have no beef with being behind somebody going the speed limit unless the flow is faster, as it often is on the interstate or in soCal where I lived near Bakersfield. What DOES bother me is a group of slow drivers playing traffic cop blocking ALL lanes. Wanna play cop? Go to the academy if they'll take you.

I find that people that persist in tailgating me must have a latent desire to eat box steel and Kilby gas tank skids. But a hit of my 'reverse' lights that also have a manual switch tend to make people think twice about what I'm doing. It is particularly effective to turn them on before a light turns green.. It also works at night, but I hesitate to use them too much then.

But the best defense against tailgaters? Offroading.

Nothing like throwing rocks out of your treads at highway speeds to make somebody back off. But they hurt like hell when they come into the open Jeep and get ya in the head or leg!

OKLAHOMA_TJ My buddy in high school (about 15 years ago) had an old CJ that had the windshield washer hoses rigged to be long enough to be at the rear of the jeep. He just gave them a shower.....

jspeer1130 Now that it's winter and I have a jeep with a soft top I'll wait til someone rides up really close to me then punch the top... The sudden deluge of snow makes up back off a little.

Keep in mind I only do this during daylight hours and only when they are WAY too close to me

Arch Stanton The thing I hate is the bright lights reflecting in your face at night. I have a dimmer for the rear view mirror but not the side mirrors. I wish there were some aftermarket side mirrors with a dimmer that were reasonably priced. I just tap my brakes to try to get them from tailgating or let them pass on a flat stretch.
