random question for a curious mind

so i was watching a sweet video of a jeep with a diesel engine drive completely underwater...i'm talking all you could see is bubbles from the smoke-stack exhaust. and it made me wonder...

whats the point of a snorkel intake on a gasoline engine if as soon as the entire engine is submerged and the spark plugs short the engine will stall? am i wrong in thinking that diesel engines can operate underwater and gasoline engines cannot?
