Saved me big bucks!!! brake light problems TJ Wrangler
I was searching google for this exact problem. My 97 tj's exterior lights all worked even the third or center brake light. The right and left brake lights would not.
I would warn people be aware of the air bag deployment! It takes 2 minutes to fully disarm them after you take the neg. batt. cable off.
The hazzard switch is part of the multi-function (turn signal, high beam) switch. I did not remove or rather take apart the switch to get to the hazzard slider part on top. I just sprayed WD-40 on it and worked the slider while blowing air on it.
I did take the "multi-function" switch out of the steering column. It is pretty ez but requires 1 torx bit and you need to remove headlight switch knob & bar (not switch, to reinstall lower cover) press button near rear on top and pull out. You will also have to remove ignition switch by pressing a punch or small screwdriver under switch.
I have a service manual from Chrysler...

In case any of you run accross this problem in the future.
a buddy of mine knew what was wrong, it was related to the emergancy flasher switch. I removed it and cleaned the contacts and now it works.

|Jerry Bransford||Any chance that a ground wire could have been accidentally left disconnected or damaged somewhere?|

|smitty||no they don't light up with the lights off, or when the lights are on. by the way its a 99, tail lights work though|

|AzTJ||do they turn on when you turn your headlights on? They just don't brighten up when you step on the pedal?|

Problem With Brake Lights
I developed a problem with my brake lights recently and was hoping some of you could help me out.
Brake Lights stopped working,
I replaced the bulbs (one was burned out)
I checked the fuse, it was ok. I replaced it anyway
I replaced the brake switch and they still don't work.
by the way, my turn signals work fine.
any help or ideas would greatly appreciated.
