Dons_Jeep Take it off...When I bought my YJ, the old man told me the last time he had that top off was in 1997. Getting it back on will not be hard at all, just make sure you have at least people to put it back on. Like Bestop Geoff stated get a new gasket kit and you will be all set. You will not regret that top being off at all....even when it is raining you will be smiling.

Geoff@Bestop You'll be fine. The bolts may need to be replaced, but they're standard. There's a small bar that screws into the windshield with little screws. That's not going to come off easily, but it can be replaced.

You'll need to clean and paint the top edge of your windshield, and you may discover rust. But it's there whether you take the top off or not. So it's a good idea to get at it.

The body tub where the top meets the body usually doesn't rust, but it'll be good to scrape off any foam/sealants, and clean it all up.

It'll go back on just fine - YJ tops are tough, simple (compared to JK), and usually don't leak. You'll want all new sealer/gasket tape when you reinstall. Camper supply store.

Spend some time with a can of primer paint, and daub all the little screw holes.

All those little areas where water gets trapped can bring rust, but removing things, cleaning and painting are the best solution.

kik You will be able to get the top back on but be prepared that it's going to leak like crazy.

TjTheo Just try to take one or two out and see if they're rusted or not.

mittel82 The only reason we think it might not go back on is if the bolts are rusted...

TjTheo I dont know why you wouldn't be able to get it back on. I say go for it and take it off, it's not that big of a deal i take mine off and on around once a week but i have a tj so it's a little bit easier.

Hardtop Question

Just bought a '91 YJ wrangler yesterday. It came with a hardtop and we are wanting to take the top off for the rest of the summer. Only thing is that the lady we bought it from had NEVER removed the hardtop. She owned it for 12 years, and we're not sure who had it before that, but there's a good chance this top has never come off. We're a little hesitant to take the top off considering the possibility that we might not be able to get it back on. There is a little rust on the body and a little rust on the inside of the hardtop (possibly from water leakage is my guess). Does anyone have any experience with a situation like this? Any suggestions are welcome. Just trying to decide whether or not we should try to take it off now or wait until we have a soft top to replace it with. Worst case, if we can't get the top back on and don't have a replacement, the jeep can live in the garage for a little while. Thanks for your help!!
