|Binx||Im thinking its just the nature of the transmissions. Ive been through 2 complete trannys and a partial rebuild and Im at 15k now. I still have the grinding when shifting and a sound like its going to come apart at any second. Even Chrysler now says its a Jeep thing. Dont care anymore, just gonna drive it.|

|4drJeeper||So for everyone googling these symptoms that I had, I want to update my outcome with my trans. Today 2/22 I just got my jeep back from the dealer. It needed a complete trans. The syncros were all bad, it was just a mess. Thankfully, everything was under warranty. I decided to throw a new clutch, press plate, flywheel and throw out bearing in there for $723.65, that I paid for. But I must say, she drives impeccably now. Clutch definitely had to be replaced. So, the lesson I learned here was, I'm a very good technician and been driving stick for years. I bought this truck not thinking anything would be wrong, needed a whole new trans. Please, to anyone buying a preowned stick shift car, take a trans mechanic with you. I know that's not the cure all but ATLEAST he should be able to pick up on something. Have a great day everyone. |4drJeeper||Thanks jaxs. My mother owned a jeep years ago when we lived in Puerto Rico as kids. I remember they always complained about the trans. But one thing I knew for sure.. That trans never quit. It took a good beating and never gave up. Thanks for the info and I'll try out what u suggested. Btw. Regardless of the crappy gas mileage, loud and rough ride, I love my jeep and don't see myself getting into any other vehicle lol|

Thats great that its under warranty.. from my experience of driving manuals my whole life the Jeep just feels like at any moment its going to explode. It is the worst f&& manual.. it rattles , it cracks , it grinds and it even JUMPS out of gear while making left hand turns into traffic. ... oh yeah welcome to Jeep manuals
If you haven't done so, I would check out 4hi and 4lo.. just to make sure that it shifting properly... oh yeah .. good luck!!

|4drJeeper||So it went to dealership last Monday, sat at the dealership for a week without being looked at, I called and cursed them out and went 5min later and picked up my jeep. Took it to yet another dealer, they finally found that syncros 2 and 3 need to be replaced. Under warranty. Thank God|

|4drJeeper||I have 38k miles on it. And the reason I ask is because I don't know, but if it were the clutch, wouldn't every gear grind? Weird thing is 2nd doesn't ALWAYS grind. But it does most of the time, regardless of rpms. I'm wondering if it could be a shift linkage. Cause like I said, 7 out of 10 shifts from 1st to 2nd, it's grinding.|

|kik||How many miles are on it? It might be as simple as a trans. fluid change could take care of it. Try changing to something like Amsoil synthetic synchromesh manual trans. fluid. You'll only need 2 qts. If that doesn't do it your clutch might have been abused which can cause what you're describing.|

Ok to clarify all doubt, the 5yr /100k transfers with the jeep. Not the owner.
And I notice the grinding when shifting between 2k and 3k. I've even tried shifting at 3500 and I'm still getting a grind at second. Third is clunky, not as smooth as 4th,5th and 6th. Those gears go in effortlessly.

OK... when driving slow, how does it feel from 4th to 5th?
when the syncros go out, it normally affects everything but, if you have rubbing linkage, you might only feel it on the up shifts and, from there, only when hitting the higher gears (1st, 3rd, 5th)
At higher RPMS, the entire vehicle is vibrating more and you might not be feeling it.
I shift at 2K and I have no grinding in my 2010 Sport with 50K miles.

It does get a little smoother if you shift at a higher RPM. I typically shift between 2300-2500. I "might" go to 3000 RPM if I'm in heavy traffic and just trying to keep some jackwagon from running into me... If your shifting closer to 4K, you're driving the wrong vehicle.

|4drJeeper||Took it to the dealer. They drove it for 20 miles. Said they couldn't find a thing wrong with it. Service guy told me I should be shifting between 3-4k. But my question is now, would it still grind when shifting under that? And why?|

|4drJeeper||Thanks lesus and getnoff I will definitely call the volvo dealer because my warranty with them is 2months / 2k miles. So they should be responsible for replacing the clutch if necessary. If it's anything else under jeeps warranty, I'll take it to a jeep dealer, I'm guessing.|

|4drJeeper||Thanks for the replies. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd, if I shift quickly there's definitely a grind. I thought my clutch wasn't being pressed all the way down, but I was wrong. It is. So I tried down shifting from 4th to 3rd, smooth as silk. Only when upshifting, in motion. Won't happen if the car is in park.|

Your getting a grind shifting from 2nd to 3rd? What about shifting from 4th to 3rd?
My mind first thought either
1: Not pushing clutch far enough
2: 3rd gear syncro may be giving out. This would be a problem in the transmition and require either replacement or overhaul of the transmition.

The manual is covered under Jeep's warranty - however - certain parts aren't. While you may want to call the dealer you bought it from about the issue, having a good Jeep dealer take care of it for you would be my suggestion.
I say this because a used dealer or dealer servicing a different brand - is simply not equipped to handle some things, and other times not authorized to order parts.
Use search and browse the threads here too. You may get stuck having to buy a new clutch in the end due to a previous owner driving it wrong.

The Volvo dealer might help you better since you just bought it from them. I would think Jeep will tell you that it is only covered for 12,000 miles (clutch/throw out bearing). The dealer you bought it from prolly has a 1 month (?) warrantee from buying from them.
I would call Volvo first and see what they say.

Jeep sport questions. Help <new jeeper
I just recently purchased a 2011 4dr unlimited. 6 SPd manual. Noticed something driving home I hadn't noticed on the test drive. When shifting from 1-2-3 I notice a slight grind or more of a not so smooth transition at 2nd and 3rd if shifting fast or normal speed. I know I'm still under the 5yr/100k powertrain warranty. Who should I take it to? The volvo dealer where I bought it or a jeep dealer? Will they charge me to bring it in? Any help will be appreciated.
