kbart Ok, old locksmith here. We used to carry spare clips or you can get from the dealer. It's a U shaped slide-on clip that slides on the back of the lock cylinder through grooves cut in the side of cylinder. Depending on how your door is designed you will either need to remove interior door panels to gain access to the back side of the lock (hard), or sometimes the clip is inserted though a slot in the side of the door when open(easy). If there is no slot then the old clip(s) have probably fallen down inside the door panel. Maybe someone else on this board with the same year and model can just tell us which type you have. When we know that and you get a new clip you can call me at work and I will walk you thru it if needed. I am now a telephone lock tech for a major lock mfg. email me at for my work number.

bchamberlin Not sure you understood my post. The clip has fallen out. It's gone. The lock works, but it nearly comes out of the door now. I'm not sure how to even work on this.

kbart Try tweaking the spring clip so it has more "spring" in it.

Loose door locks

I have a used 99 Wrangler... when I first got it, both door locks were terribly loose. I'm talking about so loose that the damn lock almost came off the car everytime I pulled my key out. Anyway, I paid the dealer something like $300 to fix both sides. Well, a year has passed and now the lock is loose again on the drivers side. I've heard this is a real pain to fix, but a cheap fix since we're only talking about a little metal clip that holds the lock in place. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I think I heard the clip fall inside the door. If I don't have it still, where can I buy the clip and find some instructions on how to replace it? I don't feel like paying that price again.
