Mass. inspection and large tires

A few inspection stations will pass your jeep with the big tires. But some police may cite you anyway for the infraction and order ir corrected. Then they will issue a report to the RMV of the inspection station who passed it. Modify the fender flares bigger.

ollie526 Glad it went well. I finally got my lights installed last weekend. They look great. Thanks again for the tip. It required a fair amount of smashing out two hub bolts and drilling through the hub to get the wires to fit through!

G-Pur Inspection is finally done. Ollie, the lights weren't a problem. The guy did tell me about having the tires sticking out past the flares would lead to a failed inspection, "but you're gonna get a good sticker this time". It probably helped that I built up a good rapport with the guy for a few weeks.

G-Pur Thanks for the tip. I may have to take a long lunch brake tomorrow.

So the big question. Did the lug nug lites and tires pass?

I finally got a working test of the lug lights last weekend (the plugs inside the tub weren't connected at 1st). After doing the test fit I'll be wiring it all up this weekend so thanks again for the tip.

Raithe79 Nevermind, I realized im in Massachusetts forum. Sorry fellas
09-03-2010 04:08 PM
Raithe79 Does anyone know when NJ inspections stop? Or whatever is going on with that?

G-Pur My inspection is up in September, so I haven't done it yet. I'll take it into that place next week when I'm back at work.

Frat36 G-Pur what was the out come of your inspection, were you able to get it done?

The link below is the State of Massachusetts inspection guidelines. Page 11, Section 12(b) does not trully state that the fenders have to fully cover the full wheels/tires. It only states that "vehicle shall be equipped with flaps or suitable guards to reduce such spray or splash to the rear and sides." There is no true indication of how much it must reduce it.

G-Pur Frat: That place looks like it's about 15 minutes away from where I work. I'll have to give that one a shot. Thanks for the heads up.

haha...Well he knows the 'rule' now...

ollie526 G-Pur. Have you tried to get your inspection yet? I'm curious how you made out with the tires and the led brake light. I read that the 3rd brake light must be higher than the main ones to be street legal, so I am hesitating on the purchase. Since the only reason I'd be getting it is to make it legal, I need to make sure it passes before I spend the time. (On the plug side, I found those little plugs I thought I lost so once I get the part it should be easy).

ollie526 They are currently in my 4wd shopping cart. Now I'm trolling for other inexpensive but cool things to add in while I'm at it...

pakman55 I followed him the 45 minute ride to that trail...Those lights are completely BAD A$$
08-18-2010 11:48 AM
ollie526 Thanks for the followup. I have no idea if the stock wiring is back there. I'll have to give it a look tonight. If you say it takes 6 minutes I'll give myself two hours. Seems to be the trend with my Jeep projects...

Definitely picking this product up.

G-Pur The each light as three bright-as-hell LEDs in them. The wiring is super simple. If you still have the stock lighting wire, use that and cut it with just about 6" sticking out of the grommet on the door. Splice in the pigtail harness, and each separate light plugs right into the other end. Literally took 6 minutes to do, including cutting, stripping the old wires, splicing, and taping.

In this picture, you can see my jeep from about 20 yards away, and the LED's look as bright as the regular tail lights.

Lug Nut Lights

Very cool idea. I've never seen those. -4WD has them for $35 shipped. Is that little light enough to pass for inspections? How's the wiring for it?

As it is I have tiny LED lights for front blinkers. I'm skating on thin ice with this truck...

duct tape and cardboard = extended flares

(so happy no inspections in FL...even tho my tj isn't quite to where i'd have to worry yet.lol)

G-Pur As far as I know, if your vehicle came with a third brake light, it has to be there. I ditched the stock one when I went with the 33" spare tire.
I use these: Online lug nut lite by delta

I'm not gonna lie. They're kinda awesome. I love these things.
08-17-2010 09:13 PM
ollie526 Here's a side question. Is the third brake light above the spare required? Mine would never fit the stock placement but i have it if i need to jerry rig it for the inspection. Let me know how it goes-and if you ever wanna take it wheeling
08-17-2010 08:22 PM
G-Pur gotcha. Good call with that one.
08-17-2010 04:12 PM
ollie526 Because I have 2 cars registered to my parents house at 800 a yr vs 1800 in RI! I'm screwed if anything actually happens, but I can't justify paying that much for RI
08-17-2010 04:04 PM
G-Pur Will do. Mine stick out about the same as yours. Why don't you register yours in Rhode Island?

G-Pur Ollie: Great info, thanks.

IG:I still have mine, but the tires are bald.

InfernoGirl Pick up a cheapo set of stockers, throw em on for inspection.....
08-17-2010 07:58 AM
ollie526 I got my Jeep from someone else, but he told me that last inspection he initially failed because tires stick out maybe 3" or so (33x12.5). He got pulled over by a cop when he had his Failed sticker and the cop told him that for a 4x4 it was perfectly fine assuming it wasn't something like 1.5x the original stock tires and for him to go back and tell the inspection station that and it will pass." It has a sticker now so apparently it worked. I haven't gotten my new sticker yet since it is for January (although technically it expires on transfer of title). I was more concerned about the 5.5" long arm lift but he said they measured it and it was fine. Whether he was blowing smoke is to be seen when I finally go to take mine in.

Found this in another forum from Mass.gov

pakman55 I called him and he said thats the one thing they are really serious about. Looks like I am getting the sticker before the new tires.
