For 2k get a new trans
Edit: And yes you could put in a NV3550 but I personally would rather have the 4.46 first gear and 6 total gears

05 Rubicon NSG370 -6spd. Approx 35k miles.
Reverse hard to get into. It'll go if I keep trying & double clutch a few times.
Fluid changed to synth. Talked w/ trans. Guy in Presc't valley - says it's chronic & about $2k+/- to fix. Any bodyelse? Can I change to NV3550?

Holy crap did this make it easy! I have been searching the Internet for weeks to figure this out, thanks for the info! You sit are a real man of genius you deserve a beer and a standing ovation lol

|LeoLee||I have a 2004 TJ SE with a 2.4L. So that means I have a NV1500. I want to put a 6 speed in it. Will the NSG370 bolt up to the 2.4L? also how is the reliability on the NV1500 trans? I really like how much lower the gears are in the NSG370 especially the 1st gear. Also would the weight difference negate the option to swap the trans?|

|PedroJr||I got the NSG370 trans n lookin for what type of fluid I need to replace n what miles I need to do service to it I got 66k so far. Thanks|

|James 98TJ||Thank for your info! Anyone have a good place to pick up a complete RH30 unit? I would need all the parts.|
|09-21-2012 09:27 AM|
The 30RH will work for you though.

Just purchased a 1997 Wrangler with a 4cyl engine. Couple questions someone told me i can use the auto transmission from the inline 6 and bolt it right to the inline 4 Is this true? Also trying to find a 30rh tranny setup for my Jeep right now its man tranny and my wife cannot drive it to save her life so im going to need to swap to an automatic anyone looking for a man tranny to swap with me or sell and automatic with all the parts?

|Flintrock||On second thought how many miles does you jeep have on it? I might want to swap you motors and trannies, because I am sick of chasing gremlins in my 42RLE|
|06-01-2012 04:33 PM|
|wolfen||A 42RLE is a great Transmission, trust me it's so good I gave one to my ex wife to put in her Jeep|
|06-01-2012 04:13 PM|
if you want a 4-speed, look into the AW4...thats a moderately popular swap...
|06-01-2012 04:09 PM|
|Flintrock||Have the 32RH rebuilt as its a much better transmission than the 42RLE that is plagued with issues. but from what I read you would have to do a complete motor/tranny swap because the 42rle is heavily integrated with the PCM.|
|05-27-2012 10:51 PM|
I have an 00 TJ sahara, it has the 32rh auto trans. anyone ever swapped the 3speed 32rh for the 4speed 42rle? if so what did ya think of it. I'm starting to have hickups with my trans and rather than taking it down to rebuild it, I may want to swap it out.
Hell maybe i'll go find a 05-06 CRD liberty diesel and just drop that farging bastage in there. the way gas is going...

"pretty easy swap" straight bolt in? And thanks for the quick reply.
|11-13-2011 06:09 PM|
|Rubicon2||Don't forget that the Rubi transfer case uses an electronic speedo and not the gear driven speedo found in the 231.|
|11-13-2011 05:58 PM|
|Jerry Bransford||The NV3550 is a pretty easy swap and the 241J t-case will bolt up but you will need to do some fabricating on the t-case skidplate to make it work.|
|11-13-2011 05:24 PM|
I looked but didn't see an answer. If you have a 97-99 with the ax-15 can you switch to the nv3550 manual transmission, and also use a 241J Rock Trac T-case from a 03-06 Rubicon?
|11-08-2011 12:26 PM|
|98tjWA||alright thank you|
|11-08-2011 08:14 AM|
|nastyrider17||Thanks for the info. Anyone know of a place to get a NV3550 cheap?|
|11-08-2011 08:12 AM|
|11-08-2011 03:40 AM|
|98tjWA||so on a 98 tj 5spd manual 2.5l it has the ax-5 tranny. can an I6 motor bolt right up to the ax-5 or do you have to have an ax-15?|
|08-28-2011 03:53 AM|
|TLATEOTW||i have an 02 sahara 5 spd manual, so i have the NV3550. i am think about replacing it with the 6 spd. so the I/O splines match, will it simply bolt in place without any mods?|
|08-03-2011 06:10 PM|
Thanks. That helped a lot!
I`m looking for a Wrangler at the time, but still can`t decide which one will fit me more...
|03-01-2011 02:22 AM|
|anthonyrini||Ok I have a 2005 jeep wrangler it has the 42rle auto trans is there anything out there better...that I can put in or are there stronger aftermarket parts for it|
|12-30-2010 06:18 AM|
|sandro||thanks texasT I'm guessing that's what it is based on the above info, so....it takes 75W-90 ,yes? But i should go buy MT 90 cause it's worth the extra $$, yes? I know im an idiot, thanks for everyones help|
|12-29-2010 10:06 PM|
If you have a 2001 5 spd, you have the NV3550 transmission.
|12-29-2010 10:00 PM|
|Ageless Stranger||Nice post Tim. Good information.|
|12-29-2010 09:43 PM|
but both transmissions ask the same fluid GL-4 75w90
Redline MT-90 would be a good choice.
|12-29-2010 09:26 PM|
thanks ! I called the local jeep dealer today to ask what fluid to put in my tranny. I gave him the vin number and he told me I had an ax-5? I don't know the diff, but i believe you over him, he didn't sound very confident, and he put me on hold to ask someone else !
I have a 6cyl 4.0L 2001 wrangler sport 5 speed manual tranny. your info says the ax-5 was for 4cyl? anyhow, i trust you guys over them, so thanks for the info.
