ollie526 As I mentioned in another post today, Krylon Fusion at 4 bucks a can is a good deal and it paints very nice. SEM is a better quality vinyl paint that will look OEM for the life of the top, but at 4x the price. It depends how long you want it to last. The previous owner painted mine from white to gray but it's chipping in a few spots. I'll be using Krylon in a month or so when I paint my top again.

Darn I paid $5.44 a can at Wally World. Took 3 cans for 2 coats. I painted the inside to do away with the white

Ya know, it's NOT "whatever" dang it!

Some of us have gone to a whole lot of trouble in multiple posts to help folks with information and to guide them with tech tips and detailed information.

Your post is fairly disrespectful of the time and energy expended by those of us who have put forth an effort to help.

If you can't try to get the information and learn as much as you can before you just dump it back onto us to type all out again for your convenience then - go jump in a lake.

Paint it with house paint and a fresh brush. Be sure to use latex - gloss black. Nice and thick. Don't bother to wash it or mask it, it will look rugged and cool.

up2nogood It really is simple, Krylon fusion is the way to go. I just did mine 2 weeks ago, check my profile pics. I didn't even take it off the Jeep, I had a spare roll of painters tape, so I just masked it off and let loose. Turned out great.

I think I used cans 4-5 on the outside. Less than 20.00

dutch169 I did it to my YJ top. I cleaned it really good. Sanded and cleaned again. Primed it and lightly sanded. Primed again with a light sand and another final coat of primer. I forget what paint I used but believe it was Krylon and put 3 coats on. Came out awesome and I had 0 expirence prior to it. Good luck.

Neil F. A lot of people including myself have used Krylon Fusion. I used Satin Black on the outside and Texture Shimmer Black on the inside. 2 1/2 years ago.

TjTheo I used krylon fusion on my hardtop about 2 months ago, no fading so far, i highly recommend it.

Prep was:
1. Clean with rag and warm soapy water.
2. Clean with rag and warm water
3. scuff pad the whole thing.
4. Rag and warm water to take all dust that i sanded off.
5. Tried to use a tack cloth but it left sticky residue on hardtop.
6. Microfiber rag to take off and left over residue.

paint:
i used around 5-6 bottles of krulon fusion flat black.
Took about 3 coats to make it look nice and even.
I dont recommend using gloss because it'll be harder to make it look even and the stock hardtops arent glossy so i might look odd.

yjkid95 Oh yes. I get completely anal when I'm painting something on my jeep ecspecially something that big. First I'm going to clean the hardtop off really good with soap and water, then start sanding to scuff up the surface to give the primer something to bite onto. After sanding it I'm going to clean with soap and water after it dries I'm going to take some prep wipes from duplicolor to it, and then tack cloth the whole thing (3M tack clothes). Then comes laying down the primer probably going to do 3 or 4 coats of primer. After that sand it lightly prepwipe and tack cloth again and then lay down 2 or 3 coats of semi-gloss black paint.

Mclaughlin_1234 And sand?
09-06-2010 04:14 PM
Mclaughlin_1234 Are you gonna prime first also?
09-06-2010 03:53 PM
yjkid95 I'm actually planning on doing my top in black with a rattle can as well. I think I'm going to go with a semi-gloss black from duplicolor.
