If you carfax it, usually says place of original sale. Vin can tell you place it was built but I don't know if it has a code for cali emissions

TJTabitha I just had codes checked and got the P0132. This was after being on the highway at constant 65mph and the jeep basically died/stalled. I limped it to the side of the road and when flooring the throttle it ran but without WOT it would sputter and die. It starts fine and drives fine in the city. Auto Zone says it's likely the PCM; but I want to see if changing the O2 sensors first will clean it up. It also sometimes sputters a bit when accelerating when it's cold in the morning. Any insight?

jase421 OK Newbie here, got my first Jeep this week. 03 Wrangler X with 59K miles and beautiful shape. Drove it home from Akron and ran like a champ for 2 hours. Wife got in for test drive and came back with engine light on. P0138 code. The only thing I did was check the fluids and air filter since the car is new to me, before she drove it. Thought I might have not put the filter back in correct, but didn't seem to be the case. Cleared the code by pulling battery cable, came on again after about 45 minutes driving. Thoughts? As when I test drove for a half hour before I purchased and for the 2 hours on the way home nothing. Anything obvious before I start switching out O2 sensors?

jcabtrade Just replaced oxigen sensor, less than 24 hours ago, check engine light is on again

p0132 p0138 & P0121

Went through the answers. Still having problems.

The problem started with my 2000 TJ 4.0 (German model) running rough sometimes when warmed up.
Received p0138 and p0132. Replaces both O2 sensors by Bosch universal parts.
Problem still there. A mechanics in FL recommended to change the TPS. After I changed it I also got a P0121. First I thought the part might be broken. Changed it a second time P0121 still there. With the old TPS I still get P0138 and 0132 but no P0121.
The problem of running rough got worse with the new TPS.
Now we will go into the wiring. Any recommendations?

csala027 Oh ok, well thank you , you saved me about 30 bucks. I can buy the part for 25 bucks and a guy said for 50 he can install it for me

Big Sarge If only one is bad that is fine. you do not need the socket. I personally think they are a huge waste of money.

csala027 It's 25 for the ntk brand do I need to buy a socket as well?
Also I can afford to install 1 o2 sensor and my jeep is a v6 is that ok? Or do I need to change our both sensors?

Big Sarge rockauto is the cheapest, price sounds off though!! Make sure that you use the NTK brand or you will experience problems. I have a thread that was moved to the general discussion area that has a discount code for rockauto.

Under the Palms OK, been following these threads replaced my 02 sensor, bank on, sensor 2 per the PO138 code according to the diagram above. The Check engine light went out, it does seem to be running better, but still feels like running on 5.5 cylinders. This is a new 4.0 crate engine in a 2000 TJ. Without a CE light I'm not pulling any codes, so I'm wondering if it just needs miles to clear up, or how to find whats causing the continued problem

The most effective tool is going to be an O2 sensor socket. A wrench may work in certain case but an O2 sensor socket grabs on more sides of the sensor providing better torque and less chance of stripping the sensor.
If you have heard of any that have bent, they were of incredible poor quality. It may be cheaper in the long run to buy a quality O2 sensor socket. If you damage the sensor you may need to being it to a shop so they can get it out for you. Plus if you have it and have another sensor crap out on you, you're set.
I'd let you borrow one of mine if you lived close by.

homiegx Yes bank 1 sensor 2 is one I'm trying to replace but the wrench won't slide on the sensor with the space that is available to turn the wrench between the skid plate and the muffler

viperx6x9x I went from the bottom. You were talking about downstream sensors right? Crawl under behind the front tire and look up and you can see both downstream sensors.

The one closest to you is Bank 2, Sensor 2. Closest to front bumper is bank 1, sensor 2.

I had to change bank 2 sensor 2. It was still tight. I could only get 1/4 turn at a time, if that, but eventually it came loose.

Haven't tried to get at bank 1 sensor 2 yet, but I would think go underneath in front of the front tire. It was more on the foreward side of the cat if I remember.

Are you referring to the socket that they sell for O2 sensors? I was trying not to spend more money and have read they bend because they sometimes require some good torque to undo. And ya I have the right sized opened wrench 7/8. It'll fit from the top but there's no room to turn it from the top. I might have to get the socket if its the only other option

Also you should be able to get a specialized wrench at autozone or something. It looks like a closed end wrench, but with a slot in the end so you can slide it over the wires.

homiegx Ran into a little snag, how did y'all change the sensor after the cat? I can't seem to get the wrench to fit over the ridges on the sensor with the space that is given between the skid plate and the muffler?
