4 cyls are not as slow as you think.
Mine has no problem whatsoever with high way speeds or uphill stuff, granted I still shit down to fourth up hills, same thing as with the 4.0.

Your cheapest option is smaller tires
If you keep your 33's Regear will give you better acceleration with 4.88 on your 4banger.
Your Highway rpm's will be higher though only a problem if you drive 70mph for long periods of time.
It will change the way you feel about your Jeep. You just got it! Hadn't even had a good full year to enjoy all the seasons in it yet!

My 4cyl gets to 80, even 85, on the freeway without issue, but once it hits a hill, I can watch the speed drop until I have to downshift to 4th, and then on the really steep ones, 3rd. Climbing the hill from Carson City Nevada into Lake Tahoe was a definite 3rd gear for me.|

|RSC17||I have a 4cyl with 33's and have no problem doing ~70mph on the highway. Granted you do have to downshift to maintain going up hill. If you want more power, go witha V8 swap like people are saying. A 4cyl with the correct gearing is as capable as any other jeep offroad, on the street is a different thing. Just learn to drive in the slow lane if you don't want to fork over the money right now for a swap.|

|530ktm||I am thinking you should just sell the under powered Jeep and get one with the engine and drive train you would be happy with. Unless you have a lot of extra money and need a pit to throw it in.|

Thanks all! All these post are definitely helpful. I am going to swing by my mechanic this afternoon and talk to him as well and see if he also has any ideas. This is when I wish I knew more about engines so I could do it myself.
And Walkingstick.. I loved the Triton V8. It never gave me a lick of trouble.

Welcome to the world of Jeeps.
Was your engine the Triton V8?
If so, I had that motor before and I regretted it... Granted it had a lot of HP but it was fussy. The fuel injectors got clogged like a fat man at a buffet, I always had to use 93 grade fuel... Needless to say it put my wallet in a hostage situation.
Ive got a 4cyl Jeep with 31s and I do 60-70 uphills. Bes of luck to you.

|Ibuildembig||Being a Ford and a Jeep man, I have married the two several times with great success. What I think you need to do is get a V8 from a 97-02 Explorer or Mountaineer. I bought my last running one for 400 bucks and they pulled out out at the yard. Fabbing the motor mounts is easy. I dunno about a TJ, but surely someone makes an adapter to use the stock jeep tranny. I would leave it EFI, just change the harness on the motor over to a mustang one and use a stock stang ecm. Your gearing will be just fine with the V8 and your mileage will be alot better. We have that exact motor in a 79 F150 on 35" buckshots and she's getting 18mpg in town.|

Power = $$$$$.....now, how much power do you want?
There's not much gain to be had wth the 4 cyl....you can get some small noticeable gains with free-flowing intake/exhaust and chips, but it won't be V8 power.
V8 conversions have been done many times on these Jeeps, however, the rest of the drivetrain becomes the weak link....it may live for a while, but it probably won't.....lots of potential costs here in addition to the cost of the swap. And many states have emissions regulations that would render such a swap illegal for street driving.
There are a couple of companies selling supercharger kits that will wake up the 4 cyl, however, they are a little pricey, and if the internal condition of your engine is marginal, the extra stress will tear it up in short order.
The most economical option would be regearing the differentials to a 4.88 ratio and maybe adding a good intake/exhaust combo. You could likely get this done for @ $1500.

if you want power, drop in all new drivetrain....V8, new transmission, new t-case and swap the axles to stand up to the power.
otherwise sell the Jeep and buy something with a V8. Air intakes, exhaust, chips, all that stuff is BS.

NEED MORE POWER- Help please?!
OK so if y'all saw on another post i left, I just bought a 97 TJ Wrangler 4cyl. Before it I had 02 F150 5.4L V8 and well I'm really missing the power. My wrangler goes great until you hit a hill then she'll just either hold the speed she's at or slow on down. and really most the roads around here in GA are 55 with some hills but my jeep seemingly likes staying under 50 with the way the gearing is set up. It'll go 55 but unless I'm going down a fast hill or on the interstate with a long ways to catch up speed it aint hitting 60. So does anyone know how I can get more power?
Someone mentioned a chip but I hear that'll dig into your gas mileage and I'm already going through about a tank every 3-4 days.
I was thinking of dropping the engine and putting a V8 in it. But I really don't want to spend a heap of money since I just bought it and don't have a whole heap of extra change at the moment. I would like a Ford engine.
Anybody have any good suggestions of what to do?
Maybe of what would fit in it?
Where to find good deals on engines?
Could I sell the engine I have now maybe to help pay for a new one?
