Masterdale The overdue update.... the high SWR readings have been corrected. In addition to all the adjustments previously mentioned, I finally discovered that my antenna mounting stud had a crack in it which may have caused an undiagnosable short.

After finding this I contacted Right Channel Radios who immediately responded by placing a replacement stud in the mail. It arrived today, I installed it and now my rig tunes in between 1.5 and 1.8.

Thanks for the help that so many of you offered, and the fantastic customer service from the vendor.

scotiez can't think of anything else. Just check your SWRs on Channel 1, 40, and 20. Channel 20 should be your lowest SWR since it is midband. If you are staying under 2 on channel 1 and 40 you should be fine. Sometimes it is impossible to get a lower SWR.

I didn't tell you why the spare tire mount doesn't work so well. Most people think its a great place because the hinges are attached to the body of the jeep. But the hinges itself are filled with grease and a bushing so the tailgate can swing open. This makes it hard to get a good ground to the body of the jeep, and the latch for keeping it closed also doen't make good enough contact. Now somepeople don't have a problem with grounding because of maybe the hinges don't have as much grease in them so more contact is provided, but its probably hit and miss like mine was. When i had the spare tire mount sometimes i had a good ground and sometimes i didn't. I was tired of messing with it thats why i mounted it on the body. there's no way im not gona get a good ground now.

Masterdale OK...here's the latest...I've ground off paint at all the metal to metal touch points. Even ran a new antenna wire to the radio. Have .4 ohms resistance from stud to chassis (?) and a solid continuity throughout the entire ground system. Haven't gotten to re-read the SWR but, I'm not sure there's anything else I can do to optimize this at this point. Any additional thoughts from anyone are welcome and thanks to all for the input so far.

scotiez Yup 1.6 is pretty good ... In alot of cases it's imposible to get a perfect 1.1. Its also really rare to get a perfect SWR accross the entire band.

firehawk_1989 Man, I must have gotten lucky. I didn't have to grind away any paint or use a ground strap with my teraflex mount... I figured I would have to. But from the stud to the frame I have 0 ohms resistance so I've got a good ground, and my swr is 1.6, so I left it how it is.

Masterdale Well, now I'm down to 1.8 and 2 on channels 1 and 40 so this is probably as good as it's gonna get. Any other ideas?

Masterdale I have now added a ground strap between the tailgate and tub, have scraped away paint around those connection points and also where the bolts for the antenna mount and the spare tire mount is. I should have everything solidly grounded now and will head out to the open field to check the SWR as soon as I finish this coffee! Stay tuned...Ha!

scotiez Around the bolt holes and the back side of the plate to make metal to metal contact with the jeep. You may have to scrap some paint off the jeep in that area too... I know that sounds like a horrible idea and i hated to do this also, but in order to get a ground it had to be done. In my past experiences with this i did give up on the spare tire mount. I loved the idea of it but i got tired of messin with my SWRs. I decided to go with a body mount and all my problems were solved. For a while i was thinking, is putting in a CB really worth it, scrapping off paint and then like me, i ended up drilling holes in the jeep to mount a body mount. But after its all done i am glad i did it. It's the original thought of doing this that bothers a person.

Masterdale Where should the paint be ground off the mount? By the bolt holes? Under the mount so the stud actually connects to it? Thanks.

scotiez Spare tire mounts do not make good grounds to the jeep. Yes you should grind off some paint to make good contact. Also you still may not have a good ground ... the hinges and latch do not make for good grounding connections. some have had to use a grounding strap from the endgate to the body or frame to make this connection. The easiest 1st though is check your antenna itself .. make sure your not shorted out somewhere at the mount.

Terrflex Spare Tire Mount and Wilson Flex Tuning Question

I'm using this mount and am getting >2 readings on my SWR meter on channels 1 and 40. Could this be happening because a). the antenna may not be grounded well because of the heavy coating on the Terraflex mount b) the antenna section down through the hole is perhaps touching the sides of the hole c). something else I'm not thinking of?

Should I grind off some paint from the mount in some places? I'm using the spare tire mount version on my 2009 JK. Thanks!
