problem start w/ 01 4 cyl wrangler

Hey guys, i have the same problem w/ my 01 4 cyl. I have a few thoughts on this that i wanted to share w/ you. Maybe you can all ask your local mechanic about it.
My wrangler.... prob 1 out of every 5 starts does the same thing. To get it started i have to pump it while starting it like an old carb engine, then drive for about a block, and its good. I got to thinking about this and having a mechanical background I think I might know what the problem is.... at least w/ mine.
To me it sounds like the IAC (idle air control valve) If the engine will not start after you have been running it then maybe its not getting any air. When ever you start your vehicle the IAC opens just enough to let enough air in for your vehicle to run at idle. Which is normally 650 to 9 rpm. Unless you have the cold start feature like some older GM vehicles.... but that shouldnt effect us since we all have jeeps. If the IAC doesn't open far enough, there will be no air consumed by the engine, thus engine will not start. There is a little motor in the IAC, and it sits on your throttle body. Sometimes those motors will go bad.
Another thing... the TPS (throttle position sensor) could have gone bad too! Or it might be creating the problem all together. It has a motor on it that actually controls the flapper in the throttle body. It could be working erratic and causing the problem too.


Here is a good way to check to see if its a fuel problem. Make sure you have two guys for this.
unplug your fuel line from the rail. Have one guy sit in the jeep and turn the key over, but DO NOT START!! Have the other guy holding the fuel line and w/ a coke bottle or something to catch the fuel. If you have fuel as soon as you turn over the key... your pump is fine. But remember dont start it, it wont turn over, but i have heard cases where people have been caught on fire because of static elec when they start the vehicle.

I will be working on mine prob this weekend, if not this weekend then next week to see what the problem is. If I find out, I will certainly let you all know.

BTW, it would be very cool to have a get together trail ride somewhere once or twice a year, anyone know if there is something like that already out there, or something the forum could create? ... just a thought.

db23 We checked for loose wires and checked to see if any wires were crossing/touching. The strange thing is it won't start until you start to close the hood. I have to imagine its a loose wire that is pulling when I open the hood and close it but I can't narrow it down and no mechanic has been able to pin point it as well.

Indy Make sure the hood is not touching or pushing any of the wires when you close it. It might be shorting or pushing some connector loose enough to where it doesn't have any any connection anymore.

db23 Everything turns on except the engine. Radio, lights, wipers etc all work. It doesn't tick when i turn the key and no codes pop up. The only thing that happen is the brake light (symbol on the panel) turns on when i turn the key. Literally every morning afternoon and night I must pop the hood and it starts. I also tried starting in neutral and also making sure it is in park position. Nothing so far has worked. The worst part is the dealer is stating they can't fix this if the engine starts everything they open the hood. They can't figure out the issue if the engine starts. This literally happened less than a month after I bought the car.

Your symptoms sound like a possible worn oil pump drive gear. There were problems with these in later year TJ's (recall I believe). If it is still showing the CPS code it could be a worn gear, which the CPS reads. Although I haven't heard of '01s having this problem, just thought I'd throw it out there. Good luck.

if yours isn't the drainback, then yours is likely a leaky injector. make sure you let the fuel pump prime before trying to start as well...

might look into throttle position sensor, and idle air control valve...(shots in the dark). I hope the mechanic knows that they don't have to replace things to see if they are bad, they can use an ohm meter.

Also check the battery voltage, make sure there is no corrosion, and alternator output.

my 01 decided to die on me a whlie back, I had hell keeping it alive at red lights, had to keep it idled up. (foot on gas). I cleaned the battery terminals and ta-dah it was good to go.

however, I've completely d/c'd the battery while the jeep was running and it stayed running, so I don't know why the above happened, I just know it did.

when you try to start without popping the hood does anything turn on? does it do this literally every time? I assume it didn't do this when you bought it?

might pull the panel under the steering wheel and look for anything not OEM.

sounds like something is interrupting the signal from the key to the starter. could be solenoid, could be something aftermarket, could be bad connection somewhere.

db23 I took mine back to the dealer I purchased from and they have no idea whats wrong with it. I took it to a local mechanic and they can't find anything physically as well. I called a mechanic by to show them what happens. The only way I can get the car to start is when I pop the hood open and close it. This is just bizzare... We can't find any wires from a previous alarm or any loose wires. All my electricals work and it doesn't show any code when I try to start it. There is no clicking sound. I had the starter replaced as well and that didn't help.

Cut out on my twice while driving and stalled twice when coming to a stop. Every so often it is hard to start too. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

supernova1021 Is your Jeep throwing any codes? Cycle your key from acc to on a few times and watch the odomoter. It may show a code.

Sounds a lot like a problem I had with my recently purchased 01 Sahara last week which is still in the shop at the moment. Started out throwing a code for the crankshaft position sensor, then when they replaced that it threw a code for the camshaft position sensor. When that was replaced the mechanic determined the ECU was bad.. Not allowing the injectors to function in sequence. Good thing the dealer is paying for all this, huh? HA!!

Anyway, do a search on here for the crankshaft position sensor location. It is pretty easy to find and the connector is on the passenger side of the engine compartment below the bottom rear of your valve cover. Try to unplug it and plug it back in....see if that helps. Sometimes they get corroded inside and crap out. Sometimes this helps it.

db23 I'm having the same issue. 2000 Wrangler Sport 4.0 Everything works except the engine won't start. The only way my car starts is if I pop the hood open close it and then start the engine.

Has anyone figured out what might be the issue here? I've seen many posts with similiar issues but no solutions yet...

Sahara1998 Not sure how different a 2000 is from a 1998 TJ but I had the same problem. It turned out to be a crank position sensor and coil. I had to have it towed. For the parts and repair the garage charged me $356. Might be worth picking up the parts to see if it fixes it. If you can get it to pep boys or adap ask them to do a code scan.

Same problem with my 2000 Wrangler. You can cycle the engine by turning on the key but do not crank the engine, do this 3 times for 5 sec. each time. Then try to start it.

Hey peeps. have a 2000 jeep wrangler sport, turning over but not starting...

Of Note:
Fuel getting to the line over the motor, took off the cap and pressed valve, fuel coming out ok.
Will Start manually putting fuel down intake and keeps running after, but will not start from key.
Key light on dash staying on....
