terminator012 This blinker stuff got my curiosity up so I went outside and checked.

JK.....nope they don't flash.

TJ..... yep they flash. I also found out the one on the drivers side flare is out. I guess I had better get it fixed before I get a ticket.

argyll excellent post - drivers like you we come across all too infrequently I'm afraid !! Honesty goes a long way with me at the side of the road.

Naaa! Didn't want a Ticket, and I wasn't going to make a point of getting one just to prove him wrong. Had I beat the Ticket at Traffic Court, I would have still lost in two ways. I would have had to travel 30+ miles one-way from my home to attend San Antonio Traffic Court, and even if the Ticket was dismissed, I'd still have to pay "Court Costs". WHY PAY... for something that isn't broke or illegal on the road?

I've been driving for 36 years, and have been pulled over a few times, for stupid crap, that I "WAS" doing (with the exception of this incident...). I am the honest type, and when the Officer's asked me if I knew why I was stopped... and I really did... then I would fess up and tell them the truth. Why lie? I don't like being lied to, why should they have to hear it?

I've received 1 Ticket in all of my years of driving, and that was for running a red light, while driving a manual shift 4-Banger '92 Chevy S-10 pickup. It was a Lose-Lose whichever way I chose, as I hit the yellow light at the Point-Of-No-Return. I had to make the decision to run it, or lock up my brakes. Running a light in my 4-Banger manual was stupid, but hitting the brakes on that pig, would have been dumber. A '92 S-10, has the stopping power of a Bull Elephant in a China Shop... ain't gonna happen anytime soon!

My punishment... 4 Hour Driver's Ed Class at a local High School, after hours. After completing the 8 hour class (yeah..... it was only 4..... but felt like 8, with some of the folks we had in that class..... everyone but me was innocent.....).

Now... my take on LEO's... They're people, just like us. We're all Human! They wear a uniform for Law Enforcement, like I used to wear a Military Uniform for 27 years. We were always taught to, "Respect the Uniform"! I treat people like I want to be treated, fairly and honestly. If I screw up, I'm the first one to admit it. We all learn from our mistakes, even me. I'm not going to try and lie my way out of a ticket, if I did something to cause the Officer to pull me over. It's just the way I was raised. When I have been pulled over the other few times in the past, and the State Trooper had asked me, "Sir, do you know why I pulled you over?" (Aug 14th 2008 in West Texas...), my response was, "Yes Sir, I believe I was doing over 80 in an 80 zone." When asked, "WHY" I was going over 80 in an 80, I explained that my Cruise was set on 80, and with the hills and passing gear combo, my little 4-Banger (Suzuki SX4 Crossover...) just gets up and goes. I told him I would reset my Cruise to 75-mph, to compensate for the 5-mph difference in the passing gear assist. He laughed, and said, "Thanks for being honest. I don't get that too often." With that, I got a Warning Ticket, and told to drive safe and have a nice day. I told him the same!

If I deserve to be stopped by a LEO, then so be it. However, if I HAVEN'T done anything wrong, then I don't expect to be pulled over, because the Officer is ill-informed, about the vehicle I'm driving. If I am falsely Ticketed for an infraction that I DID NOT do, rest assured Fellow Jeeper's, I WILL fight it in court, with any documentation I can get my hands on, before said Court Date!

Thanks to ALL for responding! This has certainly been an educational experience!

Cheers!

Had to say that to an SC State Trooper who falsely accused me of speeding and as well as telling me thst my license was expired even though it wasn't. Needless to say, I drained my lizard in his cheerios.
Yes SC Trooper are crazy especially I'd your under the age of 20. I don't know if this is even a law but I got pulled for accelerating too quickly it went from 35 to 65 so I hit the gas haha and I've also been pulled over for having my doors off because I didn't have side mirrors, lucky I've always been able to get out of them because they liked my Jeep haha but yes I testify that if you live in SC and your young they'll pull ya for anything....

bflank That particular cop sounds like he had a bug in his nether regions and was out of line. But I can tell you from personal observation that being on the other side of the conversation you come to believe that every single driver you ever pull over will lie to you. The fact is only most of the drivers lie to you, but a lot of cops get an attitude. I'm betting you would too.

Haha alright. Dictates of a warrior by sf_kilo. Haha I bet you're in the same class of people that believe that because you walk in a crosswalk you have the right of way? Well guess what? Law dictates you do, but physics tells me no matter how right I find myself to be, if I get hit by a car, I'm right, and dead. So you go ahead with all your thumping chest and "do your worst" mantras, and I'll do my "hey Eli, don't be dumb" and we'll call it good.

I've had my Jeep just over a year, purchased in July 2009. I live about 30 miles from San Antonio. Yesterday, I was driving home from a Doc's appointment at the VA Hospital in SA. About half way back, I was stopped at an Intersection Traffic Llight, waiting to make a Left Turn. There was a Police Officer coming form the direction to the left of me, that was waiting for his Light to turn green too. When I got my Left Arrow to turn, I made my Left Turn, onto the same road that the Police Officer was heading in the opposite direction on. All of a sudden, I got a Siren Blast, and Lit Up to pull over.

When I stopped, the Officer walked up to me, and asked me:

PO-PO: Sir, do you know why I stopped you?
PO-ME: No Sir. No idea what so ever.
PO-PO: You failed to signal a Left Turn when you turned onto O'Conner Rd.
PO-ME: No Sir! I ALWAYS signal when I'm in traffic. I've been driving 36 years, and have never been cited for not signaling.
PO-PO: Sir, when you turned, your Left Signal Indicator wasn't lit up. I was watching it as you turned, and it never came on. It's possible it may be burned out, in which case I'd have to cite you for inoperable equipment.
PO-ME: May I try my signals to make sure they work?
PO-PO: Go ahead. I'll check them from both sides. Do your left signal first, and then your right.

I signaled Left/Right, and my Clicker flashed as it always has. Had it flashed and clicked rapidly, faster on one side than the other, it would have been an indication that I had a burned bulb, but they didn't. They operated normally.

As he walked around my Jeep, he looked at the Sides, Front, and Rear, checking the Signals.

PO-PO: Your Front Side Turn Signals are out. They're not flashing at all.
PO-ME: Front Side Turn Signals? I don't have any. I have Front Turn Signals, but none on the Front Sides. Can I get out of my Jeep, so you can show me which Signals you're referring to?

He asked me to step out, and just as I had suspected, he pointed right to the Side Marker Lights on the Fenders.

PO-ME: Officer, those aren't Turn Signals, they're SIde Marker Lights. They only come on when my Parking or Head Lights are on. The only Front Turn Signals I have, are the two on the front of my grille. Can I turn my lights on and show you?

As I turned on my Lights, Parking and Head Lights, respectively, I hit the Left/Right Turn Signal Stalk, and both Front Turn Signals came on. But the Side Markers just stayed lit and did nothing, as they're designed to do.

PO-PO: Well Sir. I'll give you a Verbal Warning this time, but you need to get those fixed.
PO-ME: Get WHAT fixed, Officer? They come from the factory like that. There's nothing to fix!
PO-PO: I'm just letting you know Sir, that if I stop you again for this same violation, I will have to cite you.
PO-ME: Officer, this particular Jeep model came out in 2007. They just released a 2011 version, that operates the same exact way. Any Jeep Wrangler JK made between 2007-2011 will. It's how they're designed.
PO-PO: Well Sir, you need to have Jeep do something about this, before you're ticketed in the future.
PO-ME: Officer, I have BlueBonnet Jeep Service Department's phone number on my phone. I'll be glad to let you talk with the Service Manager. He'll tell you the same thing I am. They've been making Jeeps since 1941, and I've never read about someone being ticketed for Side Markers not Flashing.
PO-PO: Sir, it's a faulty design, and you should look into getting it repaired. Have a good afternoon.
PO-ME: You too Officer!

I was FURIOUS! What a crock! I never raised my voice to the Officer, never got upset, and never got disrespectful. I was actually shocked and surprised, that being in his late 30's/early 40's, that he had pulled me over for this. A Rookie, I could understand. But this guy looked like he had been around the block a few times, and knew his stuff.

I remember reading about the Turn Signal Mod on the Forums, where you can connect the Turn Signal to the Side Markers, and have them Flash. Just for the heck of it, I stopped by my Dealer, and asked them if they could do that. They said they couldn't alter the way the lights were electrically connected. They weren't allowed to. So, looks like I'll be looking for an Automotive Electricican to re-wire my lights for me!

Other than that incident, it was a GREAT DAY to be out in a Jeep! Sunny, 82 Degrees as a High Temp, no humidity, and very little wind. Felt so good, I stopped by Pizza Hut for a Personal Pan Pizza for lunch!

Cheers!

I have visited Canada a fair amount, lived in the UP of Michigan, in the LP of Michigan, in Illinois, in Kentucky, and now in Florida. and it has seemed to me the farther South I get the less the police have the public servant attitude and the more they have the "You're in a heap of trouble, boy." attitude, whether they are good or not.

argyll I am a police officer although not in your jurisdiction. I'd have a look online at the relevant legislation and see if you do need side turn signals on a JK (which I SERIOUSLY doubt). Then print it off and stick it in your glove box. If he wants to issue you a ticket it is up to him to prove that an infraction has occurred in court, not up to you to prove that one hasn't but showing him the section might just get him to back off.

In answer to someone else's question, some police services have quotas, some do not. I never have and would not work for a service that had one. I give lots of warning and generally pull vehicles over looking for suspended drivers, impaired drivers and the like.

As in all professions there are some good cops and there are some bad cops but, in my experience anyway (and we're talking Canada here), the vast majority are fair people. But there are some that make me roll my eyes !!

Bad cop; no donut.

I had a similar incident occur in Florida about 9 years ago. I had a "headlight modulator" installed on my Kawasaki Concours (loved the Connie, actually grew to detest the modulator).
I was on my way to a picnic on Memorial Day at the Navy Seal Museum with a bunch of friends that had been Seals. Got my warning, thanked the officer, parked the bike. He was directing traffic there when I got pulled over so I knew I'd see him again in a moment.
I carried a copy of the page of the old 108 that was relevant with my name, address, & phone number on it and handed it to him as I crossed the road.
About a week later I received a letter signed both the officer and his watch commander thanking me; they took the time to educate their barracks and went an extra step and sent a copy of the letter to every other barracks in the county as well as all the FSP barracks in the state.

Good cop; see InfernoGirl for your donut.

and since when did it become a law that you have to have side turn signals anyways? that was a european thing and a "craze" less than 10 years ago to add them... most american cars dont have them and jeep has to have side markers because the headlights arent on the ends of the vehicle, but they dont have to have flashers... he knows he made a mistake and was just trying to say "the big man" "officer know more than you because im a cop"

ill say this... i dont disrepect cops unless they show their ignorance. i have been giving warning when my butt should have been fined and i know that. i try to drive right but there are some dumb people out there even cops...

traffic cops should have to know the traffic laws, nuff said.

in TN/AL you dont have to have working turn signals on yoru vehicle SO LONG AS you signal with your hands when turning... hehe

Even if the front side marker wasn't flashing (which of course, it's not designed to do that).. looking at the side view of your Jeep (from the point where the cop was waiting), he still should have been able to see that your left side tail light was flashing (totally visible on the side of the Jeep).

PTaylor Best thing to have when dealing with cops, a good lawyer.
If you go to traffic court by yourself, more often than not, you will loose. women have a better chance at winning or not getting a ticket, but not always.

also, and some of the cops here could answer this one, but I've heard they do have a quota to meet each month, some tickets being money makers and some being warnings.

I've went to court before and won, then again, I've lost ones that the person before me was charged with and won.

an example, when a speed limit changes. I got popped a few years ago for accelerating before crossing the "invisible line". so, It was 45, went to 55, I got popped for doing 50 in a 45, even though he got me "at the invisible line".

woman in front of me, same thing, got popped doing 52 in a 45, she was leaving the zone and got ticketed. judge let her go cause she said she was leaving the 45 zone. My turn, he said that was no excuse.

What a joke, just another clear message that the system is a joke.
