vekrause So I finally got a chance to look at the right rear brake, sort of. Got the drum halfway off and that's as far as it would go without pulling the shows out too (and the e-brake was off). Compressed air and brake cleaner and the tapping is gone, but now a quite whine. I'm thinking a complete brake job in the rear to start (new drums, shoes, etc). Any recommendations on brands and setups or does the autozone special seem to be a good fit? And with that I noticed a drip coming from driveshaft/rear diff connection. Like my wife says, I wanted a project...

I did the pass. first and made sure to disengage it and as I was following the walk-through I went man that's a dumb mistake for someone to make. Got done tested it out then went to start on the driver side and THE FRIGGEN DRUM won't come off. Oh yea, brakes engaged

burton160w You might find a spring that's busted, probably the parking brake spring which is one of the first to fail. If you're lucky... you'll find a pebble in there. It's not a hard procedure. Just pull the tire off and then pull the drum away straight out. make sure the parking brake IS NOT engaged. If it's the first time removing it, get a rubber mallet to bump it off from behind.

Then you'll see...



And I promise you, it will not be this clean. If you've never done the job, I suggest doing a brake shoe change while in here. It's a pain in the ass task, but it's not difficult to figure out, just springs are my nightmare.

Grab a set of spring pliers and a brake shoe retaining spring tool when you purchase brake shoes. Also pick up a brake spring kit, they're like $8 and replace all your springs with new components. And make sure to get at least 3 packets of brake grease, wipe your contacts down. And brake cleaner. Two cans, this is a necessary in any garage.

Get to it! And whatever you do, DO NOT TOUCH THE BRAKE SHOES AND GET GREASE ON THEM! YOU'LL GIVE YOURSELF $30 PAPERWEIGHTS.

Thesnufalufagus A rock might have got into the drum and is bouncing around.hopefully nothing in your drum has came loose.

I would look for broken springs, worn out pads, or anything that doesn't look correct. You could take off the other drum to compare.

Jerry Bransford Are you certain it's not just your catalytic converter having gone bad? The ceramic element inside the cat can break up and start rattling, and it can sound exactly like pebbles rattling in a can while the engine is idling

Pebble in a can

That's the only the way I can describe the sound coming from the left rear wheel of my '99 SE, no susp/drivetrain mods. No rocks in the treads. Any suggestions?
