stainless Ok, sorry it took so long. I was able to snag a few pictures of the Atlanta Police Dept.'s tug yesterday.

They are from a long way off (~200-300yds). I was in my personal truck outside the fence when I saw it and remembered I needed a picture of it. I'll try to get over there in a company truck so I can drive on the ramp and get some clearer shots up close.

Sorry I didn't get back with you sooner. I haven't been spending much time in the CJ section lately, so I didn't notice the activity on your thread.

I'll try to remember to bring my camera to work tomorrow and get a few shots for you. The APD rig looks nearly identical to yours (ie. very good condition).
The others look like they have been "rode hard and put up wet"...and they are really showing their age.

It's wild seeing some of the frankenstein-esque trucks, vans and tugs out here.

Stouttrout Well, I wont be pulling 48,000 lbs with it anymore. With only 34's I think they will do great. It will also be 2500 lbs lighter than it is right now. Also, It's Sour Lake. I am about 5-6 hours from Dallas. but I will definately check it out. The axle are coming from there so i may have a drop off point and transportation down.

1BLKJP Looks like a good idea for your new project.

You sure a D44 is going to hold up in the rear end of that thing? As you state it came with a Dana 70 from the factory because of all of the torque the Diesel puts out (Probably because of the amount of weight it could tow also). Putting a D44 in there seems like quite a downgrade?

About the 208. Seeing you are in Southlake I did a quick Craigslist search in the DFW area and came up with a handful of 208's that have been listed the last month or so. Pretty cheap too.

Stouttrout Okay, so i have been looking at bed option and have come up with one. I am building a tubing bender and going to do it myself. I also scored some axles. I have a set of D44 Axles out of an 87 Waggy with 4.10 gears, lockers and only one or two rides on them since the rebuild. I also found a set of 34x10.50's with one ride on them. I think I am going to be able to get 103" wheelbase out of too. I am still looking for an NP208 so if anyone sees one let me know. Here is the bed, or something like it.

stainless I work at the airport here in Atlanta and there are a few of those ugly old mules out here.
The ones that still run are mostly used for light duty tug work. The Atlanta Police Dept. uses one to move the SWAT helicopter cart in and out of the hangar. There are a few others around in various states of disrepair.

It's Here - 1 in 2,188 Diesel Jeep

It came in the other day. Runs great. It is kind of weird to here a diesel running in a Jeep.

Taken From a Friends Website & Yahoo list

The CJ-10A Flightline Tow Tractor. They are shortened, 80 inch wheelbase, "Bobtail" version of the pickup trucks. The Tugs were used on Military Air Base tarmacs for pulling around aircraft, munitions trailors, and other ground support equipment. These Jeeps have the unique 10-slot grilles and fender mounted headlights found only on the CJ-10s.

Some CJ-10a Specifications:

Overall Length: 170 inches
Width: 94 inches
Height: 78 inches
Curb Weight: 6060 Lbs (Thats right, 3 tons )
Ground Clearance: 6.5 Inches
Fuel Tank: 20 Gallons
Engine: Nissan SD33 6Cyl Diesel
Transmission: Chrysler 727 Automatic
Transfer Case: NP 198 or 208 Locked in low range "No shift fork for high range"
Front axle: Dana 44DF "Dead Front steering, non-drive"
Rear axle: Full floating Dana 70 Limited slip 4.88 gearing
Wheels: 16.5X6.75
Tires: 8.00X16.5 "D" Load range


The 1/2 tub is essentially the same as any CJ; CJ/YJ doors, front clip, windshield, dash, etc. could be easily swapped on. Conversely, the CJ-10 front clip can be swapped onto any '76-'95 Jeep CJ/YJ. While the door openings are the same as a CJ/YJ, they are unique in that they use the "World Cab" style door that has square corners on the rear portion of the window frame. The rare Alaskan Postal Scrambler is the only other vehicle that used these doors.

While the tub is basically "CJ", the frame is actually a shortened Wagoneer (FSJ) frame. Therefore, a 4WD conversion is a swap-in ordeal using a Waggy Dana 44 front axle.
