|dend||make sure your vent tube is on both the trans and t-case. They both will sling a little out of the venyt tube if there isn't a hose to the enging compartment|

The t-case and transmission do not share lubricants. Your AX-5 5-speed transmission uses gear lube (75W-90 GL-3 or GL-4 or 10W-30 synthetic motor oil) and the transfer case uses ATF. The transfer case is not fussy what kind of ATF It gets, it can use any kind, not just ATF+3 or ATF+4. The manual only specifies the t-case uses the same ATF the automatic transmission uses for that model year.
Older ATF can turn brown and still not be bad which could make you think it is the transmission that is leaking. I would clean things up to see if you can better determine exactly where it is leaking from.

To check the transfer case fluid you need to remove the top plug on the back of the case and the fluid (ATF +3 or Dexron II) should be level with the bottom of the plug. The wetness could be from a fluid change or a leak. There is a gasket between the transmission and transfer case that could be leaking or somewhere on the transmission or transfer case. The best thing to do to try and find the leak is to power wash everything under there so it is clean. If you have one at home I would remove the skid plate while supporting the transmission with a jack stand or something and wash it all down.

|my22footer||Yea that is a good plan - I'll clean it all and check the level - the stuff on the ground sure didn't look like ATF-4 (not red I don't think) - that skid plates makes seeing the souce dang near impossible...|

|caleb-97||You don't need to take the skid plate off to check the transfer case. There are two bolts on the back of it facing your rear axle, take the top one out and put your finger in it, you should feel the fluid if it is full. And yes it does take different fluid than the transition, I think it takes ATF+4 but its been a while since I did it.|

97 wrangler questions (man. trans, transfer case)
Ok Guys - bought my first jeep (97 wrangler 4 cly manual, 112K miles) - all seems to be in working order. Replaced, plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, oil filter and air cleaner.
Only problem is it appears either the transfer case or the rear seal (if there is one) on the transmission is leaking (skid plate wet) - checked transmission fluid level and that seems fine so I assume it's the transfer case (assumption here is that the transfer case does not share fluid with the transmission)
How/Where do I check transfer case fluid level? (is it similar to the manual transmission fluid check [side fill plug]) and does it take the same fluid?
My assumption is that I'll have to jack the transmission to move / remove the skid plate to get to the transfer case if indeed it's the source of the leak (and needs to be resealed) - will also check what I read in another post about the speedo cable (is it in the rear area of the transmission)
