Digger 5 You don't want a auto locker up front if you want to drive on icy highways. An auto locker requires traction to unlock to navigate a corner. In compact snow and ice you frequently have too little traction to allow the diff to unlock and it causes substantial understeer.

As for a selectable and choosing between an OX or an ARB, I'd vote with Jerry and go ARB. I like the faster engage and disengagement of the ARB. Both products have pros and cons but the ARB is quicker.

An ARB, simply because it is a well proven locker that holds up to the toughest wheeling imaginable. Ox's locker itself would too but its shifting mechanism is bulky and hard to mount and if it goes out of adjustment, it won't work. Ox has improved the shifter so it doesn't go out of adjustment like the original models did but I still don't trust it.

And for those who think the ARB's air lines are vulnerable to leaks or being snagged, that's not true if the installer simply installs them correctly and with a minimal amount of care.

1BLKJP Well I know you asked Jerry, but I'll throw in my .02 on this one. All things being equal between an Ox and an ARB I'd got with an OX. It's still a selectable locker, but you don't have to deal with air lines or a source for the air pressure. All an Ox needs is the cable ran into the cab and based on where it mounts to the cover it's a sinch to keep it out of the way.

ARB's are great and they work very well for a lot of people. But there is a lot to be said about simplicity and strength and the Ox gives you plenty of both.

foxinthemudd thanks jerry your advice is always welcome. Sorry I did not specify which axle it is going to go in, it is going in the front D30. I just wanted to know what the difference is between the aussie and the no-slip or "ratchet" and which one would be good for me.

rickr had an aussie in the front of my old yj. loved it offroad and on road. except!------on snow covered highways.

Jerry Bransford Your TJ has a Dana 35c axle in the rear which is not strong enough for a locker. So any locker you would install needs to be installed into the front axle. NO, unlike many other 4x4 vehicles, the TJ has ZERO problems with a front-mounted locker when you're driving in 2wd. No rumor. You won't even notice its presence on the street in 2wd.

In the front, you could install an Aussie, a Powertrax Lockrite, or a Powertrax No-slip and any of those would be a great choice. The No-Slip is more expensive though and in the front, it's really no better than the Lockrite or Aussie.

All "ratchet" going around turns but you won't even notice that except maybe barely. My No-Slip is virtually silent in the front.

locker question

so I have a question about lockers I really don't know much about them. latley I've been looking at the aussie locker, then a friend told be to do a ratchet locker, and another person told me that an aussie locker is like a weld locker. is there anything that is going to be better? I'm looking at something about the price of the aussie maybe a little more. I do quite a bit of on road and this is my daily driver, but with some moderate weekend off roading (mud, rock, timber trails). I want it to be comfortable to drive on road but capable off road. any suggestions?
