4WD Ticking

Saturday - Snow falls
Sunday - I installed new break pads (probably not relevant)
Monday - More snow... 4WD engaged... What's that ticking noise?

So when I engage 4WD, I get this ticking noise that is quite loud. When I disengage the 4WD, the ticking continues for a bit and eventually goes away (20-40 seconds?). The ticking gets faster (and louder) when I accelerate, but is much quieter when I remove my foot from the gas. As it slows down, the ticking rate also gets slower. Ticking originates in the center of the vehicle forward of my ears when I'm sitting in the driver seat.

Thoughts?
