1jeeplvr I wouldent get too discouraged.There are always kinks and bugs to work out of a vehicle when you buy used.If a visual insp shows nothing Id pull the rear diff cover to see if you find metal or parts floating around.If you find nothing than you did a diff service it prob needed anyway.

Water Dog For determining gearing (if it hasn't been regeared) check the axle tag as pictured...this one is a 3.73. Here's another picture of axle housings which will tell you which one you have. Also, on the back axle if it is a Dana 35, it will have a rubber press in fill plug, If a Dana 44, it will have a metal screw in plug.

WWCW How do you tell what your axle and gear ratio is? I am pretty sure it is stock 06 TJ wrangler sport or x model

LJ Dave Tires spinning is no big deal. Tires bouncing hooking up and spinning again can cause big trouble, especially if you have the weak Dana 35 rear axle.

Sometimes you just get unlucky. One time I was driving around in Osceola forest in some easy trails and didn't notice a stump because most of it was underwater. I ended up hitting my drag link and tie rod on it and bending them.

WWCW Ty it's a start. FYI though this was not heavy duty 4x4 at all. most of these trails are 2wd. This should not have broken anything. If a jeep breaks this easy then it is a POS and you'd be better off 4x4 in a smart car. There is def somthing pre existing wrong with this. Yes if we were doing heavy duty rock climbs etc I could understand. but seriously this was nothing. I went up this in a stock 13 wrangler.

elite56 Try pulling your driveshafts individually and driving in 4H when you remove the rear driveshaft and 2H when you remove the front. I'd start with the rear driveshaft.
If the noise goes away it's probably a U-joint.
If it ends up being that then just check for play in the joints. It should be easy to distinguish.
No offense but breaking something while wheeling has nothing to do with the PO. You have to pay to play

SurfKaster Did you break a u-joint? If they look ok pull the differential cover & check the gears.

Major problem help

MAJOR PROBLEM HELP
Was 4x4 yesterday with my son. His 06 Tj we were going up a sand hill climb in Citrus Cnty FL were you need 4 low. Going up he lost momentum and tires spinning when the rear started making this horrible clanging/banging noise at what appears the left rear wheel. it sounded like the axle or something breaking. Now even it 2wd like when i put it in rev it makes it for a few seconds and when driving mainly in first few gears. Any idea what could this be? We def got screwed on this jeep we just got less then a month ago we already have to replace the gas tank.
